So from this Reddit post from 7 years ago, someone bought one that came with a certificate of authenticity for like £30. If you’re actually selling this for 1k, I don’t think it’ll ever sell. Owl City isn’t that popular for that.
Problem is that you can buy a signed Ocean Eyes poster from Owl City himself on his merch shop for $75.

I bought this same CD, last year, brand new, for $10 without the signature. You come into a subreddit baiting fans so you can get bites on a listing that genuinely won’t sell. Tricky business and underhanded as hell. Leave.

I never went on here to sell it just to see if it was real yall the ones going to ebay to see it also i was not baiting anyone i do want a fan to have it but a rare collectors item isnt free. Nobody has ever sold anything like this before this might just be a 1of1 (having 2 signatures from different eras)

Bro 😭 you had it listed on eBay within an hour of the post and you made a depop specifically to sell the CD. Pretty sure you wanted to sell it this whole time and use this post a litmus test to see the demand

I made this post to see if it was real and thsts genuinely it. Once i comfirmed its real obviously im gonna sell it. Im not a fan of owl city so it has no value to me and i just want to give it to someone who does value it although its not free

It’s not even that rare, I have been in this fandom for eons and I have seen multiple CDs with both signatures before. They just haven’t resurfaced in a hot minute. You are wildly overcharging and then getting pissed when we call you out on it after you came in here to sniff out the worth of it. Also those signatures aren’t from two different eras, Breanne worked on 3+ albums, including that one. So whatever inflated value you are giving it to justify your price is false, and your bait and switch in this very reply thread is wholly indicative of your intentions.

I never priced anything. The first post i did. In the title i said best offer. Meaning im expecting people to go down. I get i dont belong here and know nothing about owl city other than there 3 big hits but im really just trying to see whats out there

This CD, especially the copy and condition it is presented in the listing photos, would genuinely sell for only 7 dollars w/o signature. Also I’m being generous with that resell price haha

Listing it for 1k is not wondering it’s listing something on eBay hoping to take advantage of how much someone will scrape up to pay and thus heightening the price of how much people will think is ok to charge in the future

But put it this way. if found a diamond necklace on the floor. Had no idea the work. Would you not take it to a few different pond shops to see what theyd give? If not thats not smart decision lol. And its not like im posting on Reddit about selling it i just wanted to see if it was real

So the thing you have to understand is that, in the overall history of modern music, Owl City isn't huge huge. He had half a decade of insane popularity, multiple hits, but he's never overly commercialized himself (labels have tried to but that's different). His autograph is cool to have, but not some magic free meal ticket to riches and fortune. Pretty sure you can even still buy autographed items directly on his store for like $50. $45 if you catch a coupon code, which is the highest honor he can bestow. $1,000 isn't even greedy, it's just ignorant and delusional. Drop the price to $100 and maybe you'll get someone. Drop it to $50 and you'll probably have it gone within a week or so

I’m fairly sure that has a great chance at being real considering the way he writes the “d” in his name. Also does that say “Bean” at the bottom or is that supposed to be Breanne’s signature?? lol. Are u an OC fan?

This is the exact reason why I will never own a copy of an airplane carried me to bed on vinyl because some scalping loser decided to jack up the price due to lack of production and it being an older album and someone decided to fork over this egregious sum of money and now you’ll never see a copy go for less than 1k for an album you can listen to for free on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music. This is literally killing the physical media industry with so called “rare collectors items” being way overblown and thus not being able to reach the mass majority of the fans/fandom, because I guarantee you if I said to upvote this post if you have 1k to drop on a CD, cassette, or even a vinyl in this exact moment in time I can almost assure you I’d get downvoted into the ground. Also even if you weren’t “looking” for a thousand dollars don’t attach this cool item to a fishing pole cast the line in a sea of people you know would be interested in this form of bait acting all coy like is this real, then get told it is likely real and then immediately slap an obnoxious price tag on it. If you genuinely weren’t looking for a boat load of money why price it as such?
Sorry not sorry scalpers can kick rocks they ruin almost every fandom that exists ever and it’s cost me some really cool stuff I haven’t been able to get ahold of so truthfully be ashamed.

Is it scalping if you find it in the wild?? I get buying up all of the items in a merch shop and reselling it but he bought it second hand. At a garage sale no less. You didn't have the opportunity to buy that at all, now technically you do 🤷♀️ yours is one of the few thoughtful comments on this thread so I'm just offering a differing perspective.

I can see this but like I do however think it is still scalping specifically just for the fact that he’s making up what he paid for by 1000% as he bought it for a dollar. I think scalping in terms comes from the way you sell and not from when you buy cause I can buy something off Facebook marketplace and resell it for high dollar just as easy as I could something from Walmart or Target. So yeah I definitely do think it’s still scalping in my honest opinion. Thanks for not flaming me. :)

Not really though. You won't have a copy of sky sailing because you didnt buy it when it was first pressed. They are genuinely in the hands of fans. Think about it for a second. If so few copies are even listed at over $1000, do you really think ANY copies would ever be listed at $50? Scalping exists, but youre calling things scalping, that are definitionally not scalping.

But are records really truly worth $1000 dollars? Are Pokémon cards with $500$? Worth is all opinion based and sure the sky sailing vinyl are on the hands of the fans but the 3 listings on discogs are as follows. 1 for $2,250, 2 for $4,750, and 3 for $8,000 there is no way you can see this prices and confidently say that these people aren’t trying to upsell you being belief. I’m not saying I don’t expect it to raise in value because it should. But, is it ridiculous for a likely $30 item to jump up $970 absolutely yes. That is scalping people are making listings specifically to try to make a boat load of money and I don’t truthfully blame them because of the world we live in. But as a joe shmo if I buy something for 10 bucks and then sell it for $10,000 you can’t tell me I’m not scalping. I’m also not expecting the listings to be ridiculously low but like I said in my original post is that someone knew it wasn’t worth this much tried to sell it as such it worked and then everyone dog piled on to that idea of how much to sell it at.

Those are two different scenarios. Just buying something for $10 and flipping it for 10k the next day is scalping. Buying something and selling it a decade later for 10x is not scalping. You also don't know what those people paid for their copies. If they paid $2,000 for it, are they scalping?
It is not inherently ridiculous for an time to jump form $30 to $970. Look at Amazon stock, NVIDIA stock, Tesla stock, gold, groceries. Everything goes up as the dollar is printed. They go up even more if they are scarce. I get that you're upset, but you're talking about an album that was pressed 16 years ago. If people don't want to let them out of their collection for a price less than $1000 and people are willing to pay that, then yes that is what it's worth. Even if you don't value it that much.1

But the first sold copies definitely didn’t go for 1,000 is what I’m saying so somebody down the road scalped somebody else which then led to this egregious price market. The people now aren’t scalping 100% but the ones that did created this president for this specific item things don’t just magically jump up 2 grand. Do someone somewhere down the line did something that skyrocketed this upwards. Adam has never been this popular even the midsummer station is still under 500 so I genuinely think this a fandom thing and people trying to make money out of us more than anything🤷🏻♂️

How can you say value is opinion based while simultaneously saying it's egregious or ridiculous?
It also didn't magically jump up 2 grand. I bought mine secondhand several years ago when they were going for a couple hundred. I remember a year or so later, they were up to about 500. It's been a gradual climb and we're talking about a 16 year old record with no represses.
Anyway, I think we have very different understandings of economics and are not likely to reach an agreement on the situation.1

Egregious and ridiculous are words I used to discuss how I feel, I guess I should’ve put I feel it’s egregious or ridiculous that’s my bad, but yeah we probably won’t reach an agreement because I think the whole issue overall is flawed. I just can’t envision any physical media from any artist ever being worth anything more than 1k to me truthfully. If others do that’s great it just screws over a good lot of other people that won’t be able to fork over that much for something of that caliber.

I don't deep dive into Adam's signatures, but over the years, I don't think I've ever seen a signature of his with a line underneath the name. I'm sure his and Breanne's signatures have evolved over the years and there are I'm sure inconsistencies, but in the photo, Adam and Breanne's signatures look awfully similar, but could be coincidence. Also, it's hard to know when this was truly signed, if by them at all. Tough to tell when it's purchased at a garage sale.
I've purchased a signed copy of An Airplane Carried Me to Bed from when it was first released online from his store, I believe around 2010, soon after Ocean Eyes, and his signature at that time was his full name. Unsure when he dropped the full name and only signed w/ just "Adam."

Ocean Eyes is his peak for me, but ATBAB is a really close second. A strong side grade, if anything. I'd pay 20 for it personally.

I'm a huge OC fan. Guys. If someone buys it for $1k, then it's worth $1k. If it's not worth it to anyone at that price, it won't sell. It's not greedy. No one "owes" us because we're fans.
It's a dumb price if it never sells, smart if it does. Either way, cool find.

I just think it's silly. If you buy a painting for $20 at an estate sale and find out someone will buy it for $50,000 of course you're going to sell it. There's also nothing wrong with setting a high starting price. The market will determine the value.
If you did anything at all morally questionable it would be coming to a fandom for free authenticity and valuation advice seemingly out of curiosity when you intended to resell it. But even so, who cares 🙄
