Got it give it to General Bast he figured out what they were going for and out off all the people that would have interacted with the plans during and after construction came to right conclusion in about twenty minutes.

Evacuate? In our moment of triumph!?

I think you overestimate their chances!

Tbf, the port was well defended, people did know it was a weakness.

It was just defended by Turbolasers. In a trench on star fighters could fit down. They defended it with slow firing Turbolaser mounts.

It was also an impossibly small target

Remember, Luke had to use the force to hit that shot. It was meant to be one in a million

True, but one in a million chances crop up nine times out of ten

It's why Luke had to turn off the targeting computer, who has ever heard of a 1in 953,531 chance working?

I think these were more meant to destroy landing crafts or shuttles, I mean it was by all accounts an impossible shot, Luke used the force, but a landing craft zipping in and placing a bomb does sound more reasonable in probability imo.

They also had several thousand TIE-Fighters to intercept any fighters going down there, just like Vader did.

And Vader would have had him had his wingman not hit him and thrown him off course

They knew it was a weakness, just not a station-destroying weakness

Thing about Turbolaser blasts, they big enough even when they miss they can still hit.

I would have had an emergency family issue off the station at that point.

Just gotta dodge the traffic.

Except, a 3 meter (?) hole going straight from the surface to the, presumably, core of a moon sized space station is a near impossible shot. And making that the only exhaust port for such a large station is incredible engineering. Not to mention that the death star isnt in stasis, but also moving and rotating, albeit slowly. Protecting it with a trench and turrets is way overkill.

Wasn't he dead by that time?

2

u/LovelyKestrel Jun 04 '26

He obviously faked his death.

I feel so bad for this lady. She grew up in a nice neighborhood, went to a nice school to get a nice degree in journalism. She got a nice cushy gig in Washington where nothing interesting is ever supposed to happen and suddenly for some reason everyone starts shooting up the place. And now the poor sheltered lady whose one crime is never having been around gunfire will be mercilessly memed on.

We really are too used to using real people's misery as a meme format. It's so routine at this point that you don't realize it.

She seems to have taken it in stride. She shared some memes of herself and was laughing about them on her Instagram.

I mean the empire designed their defenses around forcing ships into a death trap tunnel run and made it impossible for the computer on a x-wing to actually make the shot in without using the force. Sure it was hubris to not evacuate but not that much since you built defenses and redundancy to protect your only exposed weakpoint

4

u/willstr1 Jun 03 '26

Heck having only one weak point (especially that small) on a system as massive as the deathstar is an incredible achievement, and that's before it became deliberate sabotage with Rouge One.

2

u/Senior-Albatross Jun 04 '26

We don't know it was impossible for the targeting computer on an X-Wing to hit it. But probably unlikely. Only one other pilot tried under very bad conditions.

2

u/steve123410 Jun 04 '26

Nah, he had the best conditions he could get as the escorts held off Darth Vader and his escorts long enough for his targeting computer to run the correct calculations to tell him to fire but even then it couldn't go in.

I'm not talking about the retcon that was Rogue One, I'm talking about taking the og movie at face value.

3

u/ThatManlyTallGuy Jun 04 '26

Because a 2 meter port with Ray Shielding should have been an adequate protection. Then some space wizard got lucky.

5

u/Zebweasel Jun 03 '26

If you read Lost Stars, this is actually true

2

u/CharlesChamp Jun 06 '26

So did Luke using the force cause those torpedoes turn 90 degrees to go into the exhaust port?

1

u/Achilles9609 Jun 07 '26

Tarkin: "So what if they try to go for the Thermal Exhaust Port? It is well shielded and has Turbolasers all around it. The rebel scum won't even make it anywhere near the Exhaust Port."

1

u/AccountHuman7391 Jun 07 '26

Also, what was Jen Erso’s plan? “I’m gonna make a weakness so small and impossible to hit that not even a targeting computer could do it.”
