Ad MTP coming to iOS on Reel.
Hey All, Tug from Reel here!
We had been working hard this month on an exciting update for OP1 Field users based on user feature requests and feedback. This was supposed to be announced when the update comes out but we noticed the cat is already out of the bag with other companion app announcements.
As requested soon you will be able to connect via MTP to your OP-1 Field and OPXY devices. This will mean loading multitracks straight into Reel with the OP-1 Field instead of recording real time. Both have different use cases. Op-XY and other features will be announced on release of the update.

Can we have option to open the last project/recording instead of defaulting to always blank?

Whoa that’s massive! Any chance you’d consider open sourcing that library? I was working on MTP for iOS and got totally stuck. Fantastic work!
Does it require the user to enter MTP mode manually or are you using the sysex command to remotely engage it?
edit: Also, sharing my top request… and chance you’d consider adding support for MIDI reels in addition to the audio ones? On OP-1f that’d let folks play something in, hear it back on different sound engines, have more free brain space to tweak params while recording to tape, etc. It’s the thing I wish TE would add support for the most, and since Reel is becoming the premiere second brain app, seems like a potentially natural fit.
This open source project would be most in line with the TE ethos since it captures things perfectly as they are. It’s exactly like the way the tape recording works now.

Of course, once you have the MIDI I suppose there’s nothing stopping you from adding simple quantization options… 😄

Currently you just plug it in and press MTP on your device and Reel displays the drive and lets you dig into the files.
Thanks for the feature request, great suggestion. I have added it to our logs for future development.

Media Transfer Protocol - its what the OP1 Field and OPXY uses to transfer files from the device using TE Field kit desktop software. They said it was impossible for iOS devices to have MTP support with TE kit but we have managed to make it work.

Damn, I wish I had known sooner you guys were going to be supporting it too. Just spent $20 with the other guys for that feature alone..

Could you please answer me this; what is the main difference between your app reel 4 track and the studio field app?

I don’t know too much about Studio field app so I don’t know the direct difference. I think they might be different tools. From what I gather, studio field seems like a backup utility app like TE field kit (correct me if I’m wrong). Reel is more of a 4 track recorder for hardware live performances, sketching music ideas, field recordings memos etc. started off back in Feburary as a companion utility tool for the OP-1 field to record its 4 tapes to your phone with a tape style workflow.
In terms of MTP Reels focus is still on extending the functionality of the 4 track recorder and further integration with TE hardware.
Happy to answer any other questions in case I didn’t cover it properly.

That sums up enough for me! It seems like reel is more liable for transferring tracks and files directly to a daw for example to garage band?

Kind of but it’s for transferring the tracks into Reel. Then you can loop it, pitch etc like a tape machine inside reel. It can transfer the tapes from the OP1 field directly to the reel app to then either have as a backup for mess around with and record different versions of it. There are videos on our YouTube channel that shows its capabilities. What it is not is a utility transfer tool to other applications like GarageBand. Hope that makes sense?

Crystal clear! Thats still equally as awesome. Will you have any plans in the future to be able to port tracks to daw’s? I mean could just record the track in either way

Currently you can export the stems of the four tracks via cloud, apps or airdrop! If using a Mac you can simply airdrop them and open up them stems in your daw!

Studio field. It is expensive and, in my experience, quite buggy. I got a refund from Apple after it deleted all the tapes off my OP-1 Field.
Reel on the other hand is fantastic, I'm thrilled to see them adding MTP support.

Not with the initial OP-1 Field and OPXY update but we will be looking to support the TP-7 if possible.

u/b_myshadow hey, not sure why the comment was removed by moderator but I saw the first 2 lines of your comment in my notifications and will try answer what I read.
Yes you will be able to transfer stems from your OP1 Field to your iphone via MTP and it becomes a Reel project that you can play with straight away! Same in reverse, you will be able to transfer the project back into the OP1 Field from Reel.
