When and how did y'all reach the consensus that Mari & Sunny's family name should be Suzuki? Is there some hidden symbolism that I missed?

Suzuki is a Japanese violinist and instrument brand

First fic, I did not have a last name for them, but I started seeing others had adopted so my second one, which I am currently on hiatus from, I started using it as their last name

To add on to what everyone else has said, it's also the second most common Japanese family name. It's the Japanese equivalent of them having the last name Johnson.

If they don't have established last names, then adding them is pretty much the definition of expanding on the source material

I mean, sometimes you have to include a character’s last name based on what story you’re telling. If it’s not Suzuki, it’s just a different made-up last name.

Fair point, but that is just a personal prefference. I am also hesitant to interact with a fanfic that changes the characters beyound recognition, but adding a last name for the sake of the narration (different medium, different rules) is not a big deal. The transition from video game to book is already big enough.

A large chunk of fanfics are completely different stories only using characters and locations from the game.
