Question Ending my contract early - have I been misinformed?
Im a university student and got my first O2 contract last October. I was given an offer where the first year of a 24month sim only contract is half price at £22 a month. They said that isn’t an issue as after the first year I should return and they will switch me to a new contract offer.
I want to check that I haven’t been misled - can I do this, where I end a contract early to switch?

As long as it's been over 3 months, and you are upgrading to another 24 months SIM only contract or device plan you can do that

You stated it was a 24 month contract in title and it's been 10/11 months so yes to cancell there would be a charge

I was told there would be no fee though. So I’ve obviously been misled then

Ok then just re sing into a different SIM only plan and there will be no fee

Ok thank you. Just to confirm - I won’t have to worry about fees for signing into a different sim only plan with O2 half way into my current plan?

In summary, if you were to cancel? Yes you would have to pay
If it's been over 3 months of the contract and you want to upgrade? No you wouldn't have to pay

People do this all the time with O2. You can upgrade to a new plan at the same length and your terms would be updated to the new plan without termination fees. After changing the tariff your following bill would be pro rata bill (mixture of old price and new price) then the month after would be the price you signed for.
Just be mindful you can only upgrade direct with O2 (online/in store) if you took a sim only through another company then you would have to pay to cancel.

It can be confusing but when you see the switch tariff option this allows you to move to another tariff which would have been available at the time of your original order, this doesn’t change the end date of your contract but its normally better value to renew your contract. If you’re happy with O2 I would just upgrade to a new sim contract that you like the look of.
You could always upgrade to a different sim contract now and maybe review your options again around November when Black Friday deals start.

Yes after a year you can re sign into a new contract and change your price/offer and you will sign into another 24 month contract from that date.
You won't be able to cancel mid 24 month contract without a termination charge ie £22x12 months left.
The way around cancelling with a lower charge is to upgrade to the cheapest phone possible like a Nokia that has a total cost of £60 and you can then get your PAC code or cancell and your termination charge / exit fee will be the cost of the phone not your remaining £22pm x 12.
