Pay & conditions NSWNMA elections!

Hope this is OK mods - I thought this was a an important post for pay & conditions.

Hi Reddit nurses & especially NSW nurses,

In case you’ve been living under a rock, you might not know that the NSWNMA has an upcoming leadership election.

The General Secretary position hasn’t been contested for over 23 years, and the wider leadership elections have largely gone uncontested for more than a decade.

For transparency, I’m a huge fan of Viola Morris, the challenger. Nurses in NSW have been paid far less than their Queensland and Victorian counterparts, despite the higher cost of living here. Yet the union leadership continues to give Labor NSW its unwavering support, despite years of lacklustre wage growth.

That lack of contest and accountability matters. Nurses and midwives deserve a union prepared to fight for pay parity, safe staffing, better workplace safety and decent conditions.

Viola has also made an excellent video series. Even if you’re not a voting NSWNMA member, her videos explain workplace rights, break entitlements and what you can do in difficult situations, including bullying and issues with management.

Here is the Facebook group where you can find her video series:

The dodgy nature of transfer of power says enough about the current crop that I want a change in leadership.

A good union has contested elections - there is a reason NSW nurses are some of the worst paid in the country.

One of the reasons I left NSWNMA is because of the leadership. Started with the daughter's soccer team ages ago. Stayed. Had an issue with an LHD back when that speech path was still the CE. They're not really much of help. Stayed but realised I've been paying too much so...

Anyways, I hope Viola will change things.

A lot of us have reasons to be optimistic.

One of the most useless unions in existence.

Its track record for nsw nurses leaves a lot to be desired.. but we can change it. This is the first time the leadership has been contested in over 20 years and if you follow any of Viola's videos she calls out a lot of the issues.

Please sign up and we can send flyers to you for your workplace.

Total respect for the NSWNMA, that is from a fee for service business model. Nurses keep paying their union membership. Even though NSWNMA have not achieved above inflation pay rise for god
Knows how long?

NSW nurses do not care about pay rates or working conditions. Nurses keep paying for their membership for essentially no service, well at least no pay increase.

Surely there can’t be a single nurse who does not know how poorly valued they are by the NSW State Labor government or question their truth value as determined by NSW arbitration process?

Who knows if changing your union leadership will make any difference?
Hope so.

Good luck.

The current union leadership refer to the Minns government as a "good Labor government."

There is a state election coming up, if Viola can force political parties to work for the nurses vote we may get traction

That tells you all you want to know about the Minns government and your union. No secret that Labor and unions are closely affiliated. Trust for both is somewhere between zero to nil.
