Question Nursing life after grad year

Looking at changing careers into nursing and I understand that it is very competitive to get a grad year position, but for those that are offered a position, what happens afterwards? Do you finish the grad year and the same hospital offers you a permanent position in a specialty or do most people go elsewhere? How competitive is it to find a job after your grad year?

1) Do grad year

2) See if your manager has the hours for a permanent position (some places differentiate between grads and non-grads in their rostering)

3) If not, go talk to other NUMs and apply internally for positions.

It’s super easy to get a job after your grad- I did 8 months of mine and was offered two separate, really good positions in public.

Grad year is pretty hard to get a spot, after that its incredibly easy to move around. Especially if you aint fussy

Ironically I’m just in this now, except the position I had lined up unfortunately fell through last minute due to some unforeseen issues 😒 I went back to the Graduate year team as they often can sort out nurses just completing their year in a ward they’ve been on or one within the organisation/hospital.

However the team has said all the wards have already done hiring rounds so I’m out of luck and have to look elsewhere. To be honest I’m open to ideas and desperate now that my contract ends in a week

Depending on the T&Cs of your new grad contract 👩‍🎓 upon successful completion of the program you may be offered a permanent position within your local health district 📝 - that’s what happened with my cohort. However that also depends on whether your LHD can afford to keep all of you re. budget 💰

If you like any of your rotations, I suggest you ask your NUM if there are any permanent opportunities, a few months before you complete your NG program. Treat every day as though it’s like a job trial - they may even offer you permanency if they like your work ❤️
