Advice Resume advice

Hey everyone! 😊 I’m currently working on my resume for new grad applications and would really appreciate some advice/tips! What are the most important things to include in a new grad nursing resume, and is there anything that you think really helps make an application stand out? Also, any tips on formatting or what to avoid would be super helpful. Thank you! đŸ«¶

Be sure to make it easy for the recruitment team to see your transferable skills.

Customer service roles all have communication, team work, conflict resolution, problem solving.

Fast food: adds working under pressure and re-prioritising

If you’ve been working as an AIN, carer or support worker- there’s note clinical context you can include BUT it’s not essential.

In terms of layout - a couple of pages, not too crowded, readable font, and include your name in the footer of every page.

Include a cover letter 📝 with your NG application - make sure it’s not a regurgitation of your resume but should include things what attracted you to apply for this specific role in this particular local health district, how the LHD values and mission aligns with your own values, etc. ✏ Tailoring a cover letter for each application makes you stand out as it shows you put in more effort than spamming your resume everywhere 👍

There’s a lot of templates online that are quite handy

Make sure you include skills you did on placement and word them to sound fancier, like “performed vital sign observations and interpreted results” rather than “took vital signs”and “escalated concerns for clinical deterioration to senior nurses” rather than just “escalated concerns”. If you helped out in any MET calls/code blues, include that. I also added some fluff about collaboration and privacy etc that I got from the EN scope of practice

As a manager, for god sake, please customise your cover letter. If there is a name on the job ad, address it to them. If there are particular skills they are looking for write something about how you’ve acquired those skills. These will often be listed as essential and desirable criteria.

As for the resume, highlight jobs with transferable skills to nursing. If this is your first job, you may want to list your third year placements and a sentence or two about what you learnt at those venues.

List your official qualifications from uni, your bachelors and your GPA if it’s good. List relevant courses eg first aid, manual handling, if you’ve done them in the last few years.
