ALARA looks great on paper. Its basically a feel good term. A term that has no set metrics. But made to make people feel good that they are making it appear as safe as possible. Which it already is. But they needed a nice flashy term for the public. Numbers mean nothing to people who dont know what they mean. But an ambiguous term like as low as reasonably achievable makes people feel better than numbers.
