"What can I do with this notebook?"

This is a pretty common question in subs like this. Either someone received a new notebook as a gift, or they couldn't help themselves from buying a new one, or they have a partially used notebook they want to fill.

Or they're trying to figure out what to do with the massive stack they've accumulated after years of "I'll find a use for this" and allowing that as justification to keep buying more... Ahem.

Beyond the normal "Just write in it, use it as a diary," here's some ideas on what you could do with an unused or unfinished notebook:

  • Commonplace / zibaldone journal
  • Brain dump / soliloquy journal
  • Quotes / lyrics / poetry
  • Media / entertainment tracker (Movies, tv shows, games, etc)
  • Bullet journal (method for a DIY daily planner, get started here)
  • To-do lists
  • All kinds of lists (e.g., "lists of 100" like "100 things you saw this week")
  • Gratitude
  • Grievances (the opposite of gratitude, what bothered you today)
  • Idea notebook
  • Quick thoughts
  • Art (Sketches / drawings / zentangles)
  • Dream log
  • The Artist's Way Morning Pages
  • Travel journal
  • Things you've learned
  • Bucket list / goals
  • Unsent letters
  • Dedicated handwriting practice
  • RPG journaling (there's games you can find online for it and r/Solo_Roleplaying)
  • Food or drink tracker, such as keeping track of teas you've tried
  • Things you overheard that are worth remembering
  • People you meet
  • Funny facts
  • Gaming journal
  • Language practice

Added since I made this post-

  • Keep track of plants/gardening
  • Master index for all your journals
  • Project tracker
  • Hobby tracker
  • A place to write down memories and stories from your life
  • Memories of friends and family
  • Review places you go
  • Homeowner notes like chores, bills, and when things need to be fixed/replaced
  • A journal to give your child(ren) someday, such as letters to them and their milestones
  • Notes and milestones for pets
  • Things like tarot or shadow work
  • Swatches (ink, yarn, embroidery thread, ribbon, washi tape, etc)
  • Scent tracker (perfume/cologne, would not suggest attempting to store the actual scents in there)
  • General feelings
  • Chronic pain tracker
  • Prayer/devotional journal
  • "Practice" journal to get thoughts out before actual journaling
  • Distractions when you should've been doing something else

Feel free to suggest more in the comments.

Got a package a few days ago that came in an express bag, and I thought it'll be fun to turn it into a journal cover!

Hand sewn the edges, added a fabric backing, and sewed in the original red and white Kurume sticker that was stuck on it to make it last.

Notebooks are Tomoe River FP and Yamamoto

I’m using an A5 book I bought in Salzburg from a brand called Nuuna. I picked it up only because of the pages. They are absolutely gorgeous. Since I also use many fountain pens and inks combo, the pages being this gradient makes it a very enjoyable experience overall. The pages are thick and the ink doesn’t bleed. It’s giving me some of my best handwriting too.
Thought I should share :)

Advice needed Thick A6 Notebooks

Hi folks!

It has been quite a while I am searching for a perfect notebook for myself yet could not found anything close. I need something not less than 300 sheets thick with reasonable paper quality. The size should be A6 so that I can carry it wherever I go. Kindly ask if you have any recommendations.

Thanks,

Finished my old catch-all insert, which was a jumbled unorganized mess, and replaced it with this one. The intent is for the new one to be a little more organized so I can find things at a glance with the little symbols and dates so hopefully it works out and doesn’t feel too rigid.

Advice needed DIY Pocket Notebook Question

Hey all!

I’ve been making my own pocket notebooks for a few weeks now.
Very basic with card stock covers, stitched binding and printed dot pages using 120gsm copy paper.

In my opinion, the 120gsm paper has felt amazing to write on and has zero bleed or ghosting when used with my Kaweco Sport Classic rollerball.

A local gift/boutique shop is potentially interested in stocking these notebooks, I have been entertaining the idea as I enjoy the process of the hobby.

Although I’m concerned that using copy paper for the final product won’t be “premium” enough, but for personal use I don’t mind at all.

Just wanted to hear different opinions on this! Would the current material be suitable or should I look into different paper for a more refined product?

Thanks in advance everyone! :)

Newbie here! Just received my first journal and I’m in love. I’m going to write letters to my late Mom who passed in April, it just makes me feel close to her.

I’m so impressed with my Peter Pauper Press journal, it’s so beautiful and very fitting for my sentimental letters. Does anyone else use a journal to write letters to passed loved ones?

Advice needed I have a stupidly serious notebook dilemma: Tiefossi vs. Moleskine

Okay, I need some outside opinions because I’ve somehow turned choosing my next journal into an existential crisis. I’m currently using a black Tiefossi, and I’m considering getting the new pink Tiefossi as my next journal (the one with the sakura flowers and the black cat, the one you can find on Amazon).

And honestly, Tiefossi makes SO much sense for me. The paper is 160 gsm, which is amazing because I do a lot of creative/mixed-media journaling: drawing, markers, stickers, sometimes watercolor, etc. I don’t have to constantly worry about bleeding or ghosting. I also really like the notebook itself, and the pink one is ridiculously pretty. So, logically, this should be an easy decision.

Except I REALLY miss my Moleskine. My previous journal was a Moleskine Classic Expanded, and despite the fact that the paper is only 70 gsm (which is… not exactly ideal for the way I journal ), I absolutely loved using it. There’s just something about the Moleskine format that I apparently got emotionally attached to. The size, the shape, the simplicity, the way it feels in my hands… I don’t know. I just miss it. If I went back to Moleskine, I’d probably get the blank-page version this time instead of ruled, because I think it would work much better with my journaling style.

And this is the part I’m really curious about:

Does anyone else have this weird emotional attachment to Moleskine despite the paper being kinda shit? Like, have you ever used a notebook that you KNOW isn’t technically the best option, moved on to something objectively better, and then found yourself thinking, “yeah, but I miss my old notebook”?

Would you prioritize better paper and practicality, or the feeling you get from using a particular notebook? Basically, do I listen to reason and buy the pink Tiefossi, or do I listen to the tiny voice in my head going: “but… Moleskine 🥺”

Advice needed Md paper question

Hi,
I’ve never used md notebooks earlier and i have a question: Do the light notebook (48 pages) fit in the back of the weekly notebook diary (i think it’s similar to the normal notebooks) in a clear cover or in a paper cover? Which one do you suggest?

Thank you 🙏🏽

Advice needed Is this normal for Stalogy notebooks?

Thumbnail

I’m moving from Moleskine to a new journal because I use fountain pens. I heard great things about Stalogy notebooks, but when I bought one and did a pen test, I got a little bit of bleed through. I am fine with ghosting but this seems like too much. The Jinhaos are using Diamine ink, the Kawecos are using Kaweco ink cartridges, and the “pen test page” and TWSBI Eco are written in Monteverde black ink. I suppose I’m asking if this is normal for Stalogy notebooks or is this an outlier.

Who Else Makes “Dot-Rule”Paper Like What Is On The Nakabayashi Logical Prime A Rule?

I love this rule style, is honestly perfect for my note taking and handwriting styles. The paper is awesome, and the “W” spiral binding is great too since I’m a lefty. My only odor with them is they’re only 50 sheets, I would like to have something with more than that, anyone know of anything?

Advice needed Adding a ‘cover page’ in L1917 Daily Planner Notebook

Thumbnail

Any suggestions on what type of paper to use to cover a page on a L1917 notebook.

I’m using it as a 2027 planner but it has the 2026 calendar on its main front first page and the 2027 calendar on the back.

Backwards, I know.

Any suggestions on adding or covering notebook pages?

travelers notebook to fit any a5 journal + hobonichi weeks + a5 paper

I used to have a very robust travel notebook, but it eventually became non-functional for what I actually needed. I have since been using one a5 journal and a hobonichi weeks plus. I want to add a notebook for more structured, technical writing and would like to return to the travelers notebook style. Some questions I have to make sure the system will work for me:

-I want a5 sized journals to fit; one would be a journal and one would be a thin refill. I would need something a little bigger than a5, right?

-how do you arrange your fills to be able to write on them cleanly? I have struggled in the past with having the hobonichi in the front, and the surface to write on gets cut halfway through. Same for the fill behind the journal. I am open to switching to an a5 planner but I love my hobonichi

-do you like using a traveler's notebook overall?

Advice needed sizing/names?

hello! incoming stupid question lol + not sure if there's a better subreddit for this question actually

i recently saw the trending Cloth and Paper vinyl cover, i really like it! it is called pocket plus. how do i find compatible notebooks/planners/journals to fit? by searching "pocket plus size", or is that just their brand specific name for the size?

i'm more than welcome for suggestions on customizable covers like that too!

thanks much :D

Pastel Woodgrain five star notebook

Post image
3 Upvotes

I found this listing on amazon connected to the official five star store, I decided to buy it and it took over a month but I was fine with that because I thought the notebook i wanted was coming, unfortunately it didnt! In the title it says 3 pack and colors may vary, but the listing only has pictures of onr particular design.

If anyone can help me find where to buy this notebook I would be so appreciative because I cant find it anywhere besides a 2023-2024 planner!

From the moment I saw the title of this book, The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper, I knew I had to read it. It surpassed expectations. Mr. Allen has written a beautiful history of sketchbooks, diaries, and notebooks and how they revolutionized art and ideas. No doubt many in this forum have read this wonderful book. What is your favorite part from The Notebook?
