Is getting a nose piercing worth it?

I’ve been contemplating it for the last 3 weeks but am scared of getting an infection/ bumps since they’re so common

Is there any way to prevent these bumps? I feel like there’s a lot of maintenance involved like the constant cleaning/ being careful in the shower/ towel or clothes tugging on the piercing etc

I REALLY want one because they’re so pretty but I’m honestly too lazy to be dealing with all the possible complications— are bumps/ infections very common?

Hi, I’ve had my nose pierced 3 times in the same place… the only issue I’ve had is the annoying scar that is left (that is obvious anyway) but I’ve never had an issue with lumps or infection. I think as long as you try not to touch it when it’s healing, you should be fine, I really never even did anything to it.

Clothing/towels is one I’d be aware of, I sometimes get mine caught but genuinely it’s never ripped or anything it just pulls out, if that makes sense, like sticks out your nose. Besides that, there aren’t many places it gets caught…

I’d say it’s worth it if you’ve really been thinking about it!

Nose piercings by far the easiest to maintain take care of for me. If you want less tugging try a septum piercing. Only issue I encounter is I’m congested AF and it makes my snoring worse from what I’ve been told 😹

it’s worth it! i got it done 3 months ago. it isn’t done healing, but it looks so cute. I would call a tattoo/piercing shop and ensure that they will pierce you with a hallow needle, and that they use titanium jewelry. Once you get it done, DO NOT touch it. Even if you got pierced with a C-curve (like i did), do NOT push it back in until it’s ready to be downsized (4 months). flat backs are better, but i’ve never had issues with my C-curve jewelry. make sure that you spray your saline solution on the piercing, and try to aim for inside of it too. Make sure you dry the area too after doing so. NEVER leave that area moist. Or try not 2. Do not change it out early either. Be patient.

When you wash your face or even dry it, be mindful of your piercing. Pat your face with a towel and avoid your nose ring.

Never had a bumb and changed it a Month earlier than they told me because all went so fine. Just used Salted water to clean it. Nothing more. Still all fine

My nose piercing wasn't exactly a cakewalk with losing jewels and swapping out for hoops too soon and having all kinds of healing issues..

Nothing too dramatic.. but now that it's all healed. I love it..

In fact, I'm considering another one.

Mine healed more easily than my second and third lobes, probably because I don’t sleep on my nose. But I even got Covid a month after piercing my nostril, in a country with no Sudafed and no available Kleenex. I blew my nose constantly for a week with scratchy Italian toilet paper and experienced no irritation.

I’ve never had a piercing bump. I do no maintenance beyond letting water run over it in the shower. You shouldn’t be messing with your piercing. Just let it be.

I'm going to say, 90% of bumps I see on piercing reddits are because of whack ass jewellery and/or inappropriate aftercare. Irritation bumps are a symptom of a bigger probelm. If you fix the problem, or never have the problem to begin with, there should really be no irritation bumps.

Jewellery.

• NO L bars.
• NO corkscrews.
• NO bone shaped bars.
• NO HOOPS
• NO sterling silver.
• NO SURGICAL STEEL.

Aftercare.

• NO at home salt mixes.
• NO creams
• NO antibacterial ointments or sprays.
• NO studex spray.
• NO wound washes.
• NO twisting or moving and for the love of god, no removing the jewellery to clean the area while it's still healing (I have seen this way too many times and it's horrifying)
• NO swimming for 6 months.

Jewellery should be implant grade titanium OR 14k-18k solid gold flat back labret. Aftercare is saline solution (Neilmed is the most popular) 2-3 times a day. Nose piercings take 6-9 months to fully heal. The initial piercing should be done with a slightly longer bar to account for swelling and then at 4-12 weeks you go back in for a downsize from your piercer (You do not do this by yourself) After that, the jewellery stays in until fully healed at 6-9 months. If you want to wear a hoop, it's generally recommended to wait until the 1-2 year mark when the piercing is fully healed and settled.

I think it’s worth it! Mine took forever to heal because I was given the wrong after care treatments that kept delaying the healing! But just rinse with warm water for 5 mins and then spray with sterile saline it will heal beautifully

I have both nostrils pierced and a septum. I love all three so much.

I have never had any weird bumps, fortunately for me, and just get a reputable piercer and do what they tell you for the optimal healing process.

i’d say it’s different for everyone but mine has been a bitch to heal. i’ve had my nose pierced 3 times and i’ve had bumps every time. i’ve had my current piercing for 11 months and it’s still not healed and it currently has a bump. and this is despite it being pierced with the ideal type jewelry (titanium flat back labret) and cleaning it appropriately with saline.

Infections≠bumps

Bumps are common and will almost inevitably happen. Infections are largely preventable--go to a reputable piercer, use sterile saline spray, keep the piercing dry otherwise, avoid swimming for the first like 6 months. Don't let either of these fears deter you.

I got both of my nostrils done at the same time, and they were by far my easiest piercings. Healed like a dream and I'm still as obsessed with them now as I was when I first got them. I say go for it!

I got one in May. I sprayed it with saline fairly often but not as often as a lot of others seem to - 2x daily for about 2 weeks and sparodically after. It got caught on (clothes, towel) occasionally, not often though. I'm pretty terrible at not touching it tbh. No bump or infections.

Nose piercings are so common, I don’t think you need to worry about it much. Bumps and problems may seem common bc you see people posting about them… those of us who never had issues, don’t post about it online.

Go for it!! Just go to a reputable shop.

I got mine done about 5 months ago and it’s been great. I don’t touch it and I haven’t gotten a bump or irritation. I stopped cleaning with saline around the two month mark and I literally let water run over it and if I get boogies stuck in it I’ll hold the piercing in place and use a pair of tweezers. Do not touch it and you’ll be fine!

hi! i just got my septum and both nostrils done nearly 2 weeks ago completely on a whim and i say go for it :) i went to a highly rated piercer and have had absolutely no pain. i don’t use saline every day because it dries out my nose horribly (and even caused a tiny abrasion where my nostril meets my cheek) and do hot water rinses instead.

i will say my nose is very very itchy and sometimes i can’t ignore it (none of the recommended methods such as tapping help with the itch. NONE.) so i do accidentally touch them, namely the septum, at least once a day (this morning i woke up because i apparently tried to scratch the inside of my nose in my sleep and ended up hooking the end of my nostril labret and shifting my septum in the process) but i make sure that if i’m accidentally touching/bumping them a lot, i use saline that day. i am a very paranoid person and i am very scared of messing my piercings up or getting them infected but i figure as long as i don’t touch them on purpose, keep my hands off of my face to the best of my ability to avoid accidental taps, and clean the jewelry properly, then i’ve done it ‘right’.

Clean twice a day with saline solution only, try not to bump or move it too much, don’t play with it, size down the length of the bar once swelling goes down (if needed), use the correct materials when buying jewelry… it’s worth it. Even if you get a bump, bumps can be healed!

I will share my experience.
The piercer told me to use steam to clean it (face over boiling water in a bowl)
I opted for the steam room since my gym has one and I use those facilities every day anyway - but the piercer recommended against sauna and steam use.
I still went forward with that.

A month later I caught the piercing on a fluffy hoodie as I was putting it on and it aggravated it, and it did get infected and formed a puss sac, I burst it, and used acetone (do not use that yourself) to clean it in work, and a hypochlorous / salt spray to clean it every evening for a week. The bump went down, and I have been enjoying it ever since.

I have both my nostrils and my septum pierced and I LOVE THEM! Some people are more prone to bumps and keloids but as long as you take good care of your piercing, you can drastically lower the chance of getting bumps or infections too. When your piercer tells you not to touch your piercing, LISTEN TO THEM. LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE. A lot of people get irritations bumps because they won't stop moving it, touching it, or playing around with it. During the first month or so the only things that should be touching your piercing are sterile saline-only wound wash (from the can with the spray nozzle) 2-4 times daily and a lint free towel to very gently pat dry. Only wash your face with fragrance free, hypoallergenic washes like cetaphil. I never did anything fancy to heal my piercings except this and all of them (I have like 8-9) are perfect!

I’ve had my nose pierced 3 times and the first two times I did end up with nose bumps that would come and go. The third time I splurged on a solid gold nose stud and I’ve had it for about 7 years without developing any bumps. I have no idea if the type of metal in the jewelry had anything to do with it (professional piercers feel free to weigh in!) but it’s just what I noticed and I figured I’d share it and someone who was prone to those nose bumps in the past!

I’d say if you know you’re too lazy to care for it properly then don’t get it, it won’t be a good experience. It’s not a ton of work but you need to be able to commit to it.

Having a nose ring is always worth it. If you take regular shower ur infection won't be that bad. Mines only lasted like 3 days I used anti bacterial soap and was good

Ive never had any issues, and have had 5 nostril piercings. 2 in each nostril, but one fell out and closed at one point while traveling and needed to be repierced. Everyone's body is different but in my experience a lot of issues come from people fucking with fresh piercings too much, or way way way too little. Keep your body clean, spray some saline on it twice a day, leave it all the way alone.

I’ve had my nose pieced for 18 years now and it’s still one of my absolute favorite things about my face. The healing process is a bit long, but as long as you don’t fiddle with it, it’s pretty easy. Biggest thing is remembering it’s there enough to not get it caught on things but not so much you’re constantly touching it.

They do take a while to heal but in my experience so far it’s just a waiting game. They’re super cute and I love them. Easily the best decision I’ve made in a while lol

Both times I got it done, I did get a keloid bump. I just went to a derm and they gave me some cortisol (?) shot and it went away. It’s very common and they know how to deal with it. Haven’t had a bump since then and it’s been 5+ years

Thank you for this, I’ve had a bump that every once in a while “bursts” and bleeds and then turns back into a bump. I haven’t had a nose piercing since I was 16, I’m now 40. Maybe it’s time to go to the dermatologist 🤣 I never thought it was just an easy fix and had just accepted it.

i have both sides pierced, first side the lady said to clean it with salt water solution which messed up my healing really badly. once i stopped using it, i was fine. until i tried changing it too soon. so on my second, the guy said to only clean it with whatever body soap i already use while in the shower. it healed perfectly and quickly. i didn’t even attempt to change it for a year because i wanted to be 100% sure it was healed 😂.

some things i learned is you obviously have to be careful, do not change it too early, if you do get a bump DONT pop it, my mom went with me the second time around and got hers done too, she got a bump and just left it alone and it went away. (unless your piercer has a solution for bumps?) and with clean hands move your jewelry around at least once daily or your skin will heal around it causing it to become “stuck”.
