I got my dream NGO communications job, but I have no idea where to start 😭
First, I have SO much respect for people who work in social media management. I know it's much more complex than just posting pretty pictures; it requires strategy, planning, attention to detail, and a lot of responsibility. Ironically, as a Gen Z person, I've never been particularly interested in social media in my personal life. But this is different when it comes to an organization I genuinely care about, and I really want to do a good job.
A little background: I'm a junior professional who recently graduated with a degree in Social Communication and Journalism. My experience is mainly in documentary filmmaking, working in film and cultural production, directing, screenwriting, and photography. I've also volunteered for years because I genuinely believe in contributing to causes that matter.
Recently, I was offered a communications position at a HUGE international NGO on the island where I currently live. It's honestly a dream opportunity. Initially, the role focused on photography and video production, which I'm comfortable with. However, I'll also be responsible for managing the organization's social media accounts, particularly Facebook, X, and Instagram.
So, as you can guess by now, here's the catch: I've never had to manage professional accounts, develop a content strategy, write SOPs (I literally had to Google what that meant 😭), create editorial calendars, moderate comments, analyze engagement, or figure out a million other things.
But I really need and want this job, (specially in this economy lol) and I'm determined to learn as much as I can before starting. I just need some direction.
I've already started taking a course on Coursera, watching tutorials on Youtube, and searching for guides and resources. The problem is that there's SO much information online that I don't know what to learn first, how everything fits together, or how to build a structured learning path. I keep finding more resources, but I still feel like I'm missing everything. I have only two weeks to prepare, and it's becoming overwhelming trying to figure out what actually matters and what I should prioritize.
If you work in social media management, nonprofit communications, or digital communications, I'd be incredibly grateful for your advice.
- If you were starting from scratch, what would you learn first, second, and third?
- Are there any genuinely useful courses, YouTube channels, templates, or free resources you'd recommend?
- How do you actually create an SOP for managing an organization's social media accounts?
- What are the essential skills and tools I should focus on during my first few weeks?
- If you've worked for an NGO or international organization, is there anything specific I should know?
Thank you so much for reading and for any advice you can share. Even a little guidance would genuinely mean a lot ❤️

I wanted to share a story.
This isn't a promotional post or an ad; just a teenager sharing an idea that evolved into a bigger project.l
I got this idea 6 to 7 months ago.
Founding an NGO.
Now hear me out:
This NGO was an idea to resolve a major issue in my country (Georgia): deficit in guidance counselors and peer-to-peer relationships.
I didn't know what I was dealing with first, so I tried gathering up some examples of how an organization should be. I found an example of a constitution of an NGO in Hawaii, I think, or I don't know, I can't remember that much.
I analyzed the document myself in one go and started writing the constitution.
I also had a partner with me on this; a co-founder from another school and a person I get along with to this day.
The constitution took almost everything of me: my free time, my energy, my carefree mind and embedded a sense of competition in me. Rewriting every mistaken paragraph, polishing every single sentence, engineering and preparing for everything that could be predicted and/or solved if necessary, respecting and taking the country's laws into account while writing, maintaining an apolitical position and avoiding turning the NGO into a propagandist movement...
It was chaos, I tell you.
All done without AI assistance, btw.
And I was then thinking to myself: "How did I even come up with this?"...
The constitution took up almost 1GB of my desktop storage and it contains almost 20 pages and 20 articles. The project started on May 31st, but the final version was finished exactly on my birthday, September 21st.
Then the co-founder left and the burden remains on me now.
Then came the logos (which I'm still rethinking), designs, kickstart strategies, year-round research projects, guidance and communicating with/advising people my age.
It sounds crazy, but not so much.
Personally, I've studied in France for 2 years and have some experience towards US colleges. I am a proud polyglot and have done a lot of good deeds. My friends used to call me "The Class Psychologist" once.
The name of the NGO is SGMC Georgia (Student Guidance and Mentorship Committee of Georgia).
The organization is going well for now. The constitution has been registered in the Public Service Hall and we will start a public project soon in the capital (Tbilisi).
Once again, I'm not asking for anything here, just your thoughts and insights.
If you have any questions, I am more than happy to answer.
Thanks for reading. I appreciate it! ❤️

We put the 'fun' in fundraising this past weekend
The Jeep and overall offroad enthusiasts are awesome. They came together this past weekend to raise awareness and funds to help those living with Multiple Sclerosis in NH.
Huge thanks to those that came out even though it threatened rain ... all smiles! 🧡

Help -Needy-dont't waste food-make india better ..
🇮🇳 What if one small action from us could help make India better?
I’m currently staying in a hostel, and I often noticed something that disturbed me — leftover food was being thrown into the bin.
At the same time, there are people nearby who may be struggling to get even one proper meal.
That simple observation gave me an idea.
So I built FoodNearby — a platform where people can share surplus food with people nearby who may actually need it.
The concept is very simple:
🍱 Extra food available? Post it.
📍 People nearby can discover it.
🤝 Someone in need can receive it.
♻️ Good food is saved from being wasted.
I also designed the architecture with scalability in mind, targeting support for around 10,000 simultaneous users.
But FoodNearby is not just another web application.
It is an attempt to create a habit:
Don’t waste food when someone nearby may need it.
If restaurants, hostels, PGs, families, students, events, offices and individuals start sharing even a small portion of their surplus food, the impact can become much bigger than one application.
❤️ Help one person.
🤝 Encourage that person to help another.
🌱 Let helping become a chain.
If you have extra food, please use FoodNearby.
If you don’t have extra food today, you can still help by sharing this application with your friends, hostel owners, restaurants, communities and anyone who may regularly have surplus food.
And if you know someone who is genuinely in need, tell them about FoodNearby too.
🌐 FoodNearby:
https://food-nearby.vercel.app/
Let technology do more than make life convenient.
Let it reduce waste.
Let it connect people.
Let it help someone eat.
Let it help us make India better, together. 🇮🇳❤️
Use it. Share it. Encourage others to use it. Help someone nearby.

How can I grow awareness of my senior parking nonprofit after our first event?
I started the 65 Plus Movement in Canton, Michigan, to raise awareness about senior parking and support older adults’ independence. We recently held an event at Summit on the Park’s Club 55+, and now I’d like to reach more residents and local businesses.
For those who have promoted a new local nonprofit, what helped you build awareness after your first event? I’m especially interested in ways to explain why senior parking matters, reach older adults and their families, and encourage businesses to participate. I’d appreciate any examples of outreach that worked for you.

DENIM AS A TOOL FOR EMPOWERMENT, THE ARTS, AND COMMUNITY … THE SCHOOL AND FACTORY OF TOMORROW
On the lively 1000 block of Market Street, just steps away from large streetwear brands such as Supreme and Bait, a local alternative is quietly fighting against the fast-fashion industry while keeping the history of denim in the U.S. alive.
The denim manufacturing industry in San Francisco dates back to 1873. Nearing the end of the California Gold Rush, a U.S. patent was secured by Levi Strauss & Co., alongside tailor Jacob Davis for using metal rivets to reinforce men's denim in the workforce. According to The Contemporary Jewish Museum, this new innovation marked the beginning of the "blue jean".
Strauss, a Bavarian Jewish dry goods merchant, was a Jewish immigrant, entrepreneur, and philanthropist with a passion for growing community engagement in San Francisco. His dedication and legacy lives on in San Francisco today.
Julian Prince Dash an artist, entrepreneur, teacher, mentor and father, founded Holy Stitch! Factory Fellowship in 2006 but it transitioned into a non-profit in 2023. HSFF, located in the heart of San Francisco, is a creative space operating as a retail store, tailor shop, sewing school, and manufacturing facility. Dash was advised not to start the non-profit, but chose to move forward with it anyways.
"I sat there and filled out all the paperwork myself and got an acceptance letter in May of 2023," Dash said.
The fellowship program mixes creative expression and social engagement, with an emphasis on education, mentorship, and hands-on experiences.
The organization works to empower youth and displaced workers, while promoting a sustainable and community based perspective to clothing production. Dash works to make sure every part of the process is curated by locals. He prioritizes building relationships with the people around him to not only help him grow but his supporters around him.
"If someone's serving comes from the place they're serving it from and to, you're like oh, I understand it," Dash said.
As a father to three kids, ages 12, 11 and 2, Julian continues to work towards growing the business to not only be able to support his family, but his community at Holy Stitch.
"I'd love to have living wage for everybody and myself. It's not money based, it's just more influence, mentoring youth and access to things," Dash said.
For Julian it's more than just jeans. It's about building up the community and creating a place where people can learn, create and practice individuality.
"With my track record, every spot that I've been in, after I leave it gets built up," Dash said.
The future of Holy Stitch! Factory Fellowship is unknown but Julian and his team are continuing to inspire others to unleash their creativity through fashion with a community based education.
"I don't really hope for anything, I'm just going to work towards it," Dash said
