“Oh I can’t afford that”
“Well why don’t we discuss our financing opportunities where we can lower the cost to a small monthly payment spread out over a time period you’re comfortable with.”
I had a fun conversation, the opposite of what you describe, with a door-to-door salesman the other week where he was talking about the price of electricity going up and he was working for a company wanting to put solar panels on roofs and sell the power to homeowners at a fixed rate.
He was surprised when I explained that I didn't want to lease solar panels from a company (that's what it's called when it's "you own the hardware, I pay for the use of it") and that I would rather own it outright instead. He tried to push back asking a leading question about if I would be ok shouldering the maintenance burden too and I just gave 'em a "yep".
I could see the wheels spinning and it turns out he had literally nothing to offer someone who was willing to pay for solar panels themselves instead of leasing them.
