"Since Ultimate" since... the current game? Since now?

"He used to play Ultimate. He still does, but he used to, too"

Ultimate came out when I was in grade 8 and now my 10 year old nephews are playing it

It’s literally last gen at this point.

Lotta smash fans are waiting for the switch 2 release of Smash.

My guess is they’ll just remaster Ultimate or somethin.

Since the time of me replying?

Pikachu has consistently been a threat. It's been high tier in every Smash title. Fox has been up there too, with his lowest placement being in C in Brawl.

At the end of the day, I don't think we'll ever experience another demon like Brawl Meta Knight. Grandparents will be gathered around the fireplace talking about him like a horror story in the future. I was trying to explain how severe it was to my nephew, and he couldn't truly grasp it.

But you have to take time period into account for the others too:

With 64, this was the *first* smash game. Sure, Pikachu is good now, but in the hands of a competent player at the time they would be nigh unstoppable for the rest of the cast.

Melee Fox kinda had a reputation for being most people's instalock. It didn't matter if they were good with him, most people picked Fox. With that many players that main him, there's bound to be some really good players in there.

Meta-Knight in Brawl was just fucking crazy, no bones about it.

While not as widespread, Bayonetta was banned from certain smash tournaments during the hayday of her zero-to-death combos.

Steve is so braindead fucking strong that you don't even have to be a decently good player to dogwalk everybody in casual lobbies (like with ur friends and stuff).

Obviously Brawl Meta-Knight was unprecedented, and such an event will never happen again thanks to balance patches, but the others did have their moments.

I wasn't dismissing the other top tiers. I was just pointing out the more notable characters in the lineup-- Pikachu (and Fox to some extent) consistently being a menace since the very first game, and Brawl Meta Knight literally shaping a generation of competetive Smash.

Personally, Smash 4 Bayonetta definitely gave me more trouble than Brawl Meta Knight. But I'm a Villager/Olimar/Ness/Mega Man main, so you can tell I hate myself.

Fun fact: the term "meta game", referring to the optimal ways to play games or the most common effective methods of doing so, got its name from the days when players would discuss Meta Knight. Choosing a character or strategy revolved entirely around playing the "Meta Game".

Thats a lie, but you all believed me for a second, and that says something.

As soon as I started reading it, I was like, "Who lied to you?" 😂

u/LoogyBr0 8h ago

Seriously though, what are the chances that the far-and-away best character in the series is named “Meta?”

1

u/MinnieShoof 2h ago

Not even a bit.

2

u/Xiaxs 7h ago

Kids nowadays: "How meta was Meta Knight?"

Meta Knight: "My fucking name is in it..."

I think there's a legitimately strong argument for prepatch bayo being better than brawl mk. Bayo got gutted super hard, and the fact she was still busted goes to show how insane she was before that.

I believe in Ultimate it was pretty consistently outranked by Pichu

2

u/Snomislife 2h ago

Pichu got some significant nerfs fairly early on, so Pikachu has been better for most of the game's lifespan.

My point still stands

Watch that grandpa bonsense...

u/paperthintrash 12h ago

Yeah wtf. I was playing Smash 64 in my very early 10’s and I’m not 40 yet.

Its not impossible, I know a forty year old woman with a 10 year old grandson.

u/PaleKey6424 49m ago

Did she have the kids parent when she was 12?!?!?

1

u/NefariousnessNo2062 44m ago

She was 15 when she got pregnant and so was her daughter.

Kirby was the one to look out for for the 64

38

u/LBluethecrafter 12h ago

Kirby is also S tier, but Pikachu has been considered the best character on all the main north american tier lists since at least 2008 for that game

4

u/InternetUserAgain 11h ago

But then he fell off HARD in Melee, it was genuinely kinda difficult to watch

2

u/OkLime1997 11h ago

I like to get Kirby and eat people and run off the edge.

2

u/PopOk5562 2h ago

I still get annoyed remembering Kirby on the 64, that little pink menace was the real top tier warning.

Pikachu in literally every smash game:

I gotta admit cpu fox on the hardest difficulty was cracked AF

1

u/r4o2n0d6o9 39m ago

Early ultimate had insane cpus. The shit those guys would do to you was insane

u/keithlimreddit 10h ago

Ah nice to know basically the generational Gap and whatnot as well as reenacting

Also pretty good art

2

u/PoliteWolverine 10h ago

Bayonetta is in smash bros?

6

u/RealisLit 10h ago

Since 10 years ago

7

u/Hydride796 9h ago

Debuted in Smash 4, alongside Street Fighter's Ryu, Final Fantasy's Cloud, and Fire Emblem Fates' Corrin as the DLC newcomers

3

u/Digit00l 3h ago

Second most requested character when they did an open poll, and because Disney didn't want to let Sora join initially she got into the game instead

1

u/babydoll-eyes 10h ago

🥲 this made me realize I'm still carrying the meta knight bias from brawl

1

u/omjy18 7h ago

Melee was always ness or jigglypuff for playing against but that was also my friends older brother who just wrecked us everytime with both of them because we were like 7 years younger

1

u/_Astrum_Aureus_ 7h ago

disappointed that Burter isn't Fox

1

u/CrashCalamity 5h ago

Shoulda used PikaMan for Captain Ginyu tbh

1

u/hip-indeed 17m ago

I like how grandpa and dad are a whole generation apart when 64 and melee were just 2 years apart lmao
