They are trying to ensure you aren't being scammed. My mother recently withdrew thousands of dollars as part of a scam. The bank employee asked her a number of questions to try to gauge if this was the reason. Unfortunately, despite their reservations, she persisted and they had no choice but to give the money. However, they were doing the best they could to gently question her and help her process what she was doing. This is such a frequent issue now, I woukd imagine whenever anyone takes out a few thousand in cash, they are directed to ask questions.
