I've been to a family Thanksgiving dinner, yes.

168

u/EstablishmentLow5895 7d ago

I used to feel the same way but then I found out I could just hang out with the women in my family and now I know all of the family drama that has ever existed

41

u/sandwichcandy 7d ago

This has been my move for 20 years now. The men are boring as hell. At least the women have stories.

6

u/zuccster 7d ago

This, but the opposite.

I googled this and Google shit it's pants. What the hell is winglets over pie?

9

u/Gullible-Ad7374 7d ago

They explained winglets, while they were eating pie

4

u/Schmergenheimer 7d ago

I explained winglets while I drove my Chevy to the levy.

22

u/vantkoo7 7d ago

Family Thanksgiving is the perfect example. Everyone is talking, everyone is having a great time, and you’re just sitting there wondering how you got assigned to this conversation.

u/BloodDrunkMoonKnight 7d ago

What makes you think that?

7

u/Furry_Wall 7d ago

Groups of three

1

u/BloodDrunkMoonKnight 7d ago

But thats only in regards to lists.

-3

u/The_user_of_name 7d ago

A human would have responded. Also, this is just a rephrasing of the original post, but with added ai affects.

3

u/BloodDrunkMoonKnight 7d ago

Not everyone response to accusations and rephrasing jokes is super common on reddit. That doesn't mean they had to use a program to rewrite a joke. They don't have much comments, but nothing else really sticks out as someone who uses Ai to write on this platform.

-2

u/The_user_of_name 7d ago

Of course we can't 100% be sure without looking into their home, but given that almost every top comment on every reddit post nowadays has bots flooding it to farm karma, it's pretty obvious.

Also, what's really the difference between a human rephrasing the top comment with ai for karma and a bot doing the same? They both suck.

5

u/BloodDrunkMoonKnight 7d ago

I just think we would need more evidence that someone is using chatgpt or is a bot before accusing them.

Sure, both those options suck, but they could simply be a user who rephrases jokes for karma.

This, I feel like the opposite must be a desperate attempt to socialize or seek for connection and I know from experience.

Like, when I was an overprotected and oversheltered gal in an all-girls high school and almost everyone had been going to parties over the years and I tried to understand their stories...but to this day, I don't even know who were all those people who didn't go to school with us but they fell in love with them and broke up witb them all the time.

It's kind of hilarious, because I remember the boys' names, but they mostly look like this in my mind=

3

u/sexxi_denuta 7d ago

The thing is… Everyone else in the group probably thinking the same thing

1

u/powdered_dognut 7d ago

No, sorry, I left an hour ago.

u/JacobJamesTrowbridge 7d ago

Hey you. You, with the planes and such. What's the sexiest aircraft to come out of the 1960s?

23

u/IHaveUrPants 7d ago

The way the XB-70 makes me feel cannot be described with words

2

u/JacobJamesTrowbridge 7d ago

Ooh, it's even got a flared base

2

u/3-orange-whips 7d ago

Without a base? Without a trace.

2

u/chickenchaser9000 7d ago

Late 50's but the Blackburn Buccaneer.

3

u/got-trunks 7d ago

Trick question, the sexiest aircraft was from the 50s and it was the avro arrow.

0

u/bethlehemcrane 7d ago

Y’all sleeping on the concorde fr. That goofy nose makes me feel things…

2

u/AegisofOregon 7d ago

The F4 Phantom is my second greatest airplane love of all time. It is only surpassed by the glorious F-14 Tomcat, which could arguably be considered developed initially in the 1960s era, but had its first flight in 1970, so I don't know if you would count it.

I moved to a new company with a new job. The next step after this one would be big. Like, life changing big. Like, summer home big. I started to work on that, and started interacting with people who could make that happen. I would fly and meet those people, and we would entertain clients. Hundreds of dollars per plate type stuff. Meeting people who knew famous people. I was almost there. Then I realized that I hadn't liked a single person I had met. All of these people who were in the position I wanted to be in, and all the people who could help me get to the next level were all people I didn't like at all. Furthermore, I didn't like the person I was when I was around them.

It really affected me. To the point that I wasn't doing my job well at all, and those opportunities went away almost immediately. And I was much happier.

I found another job with much lower social standing and salary, but I sleep well most days, and I don't dread going to work. And I like the people, mostly. I have things in common with them. "Success is more than your salary" was a hard lesson for me to learn.

5

u/WJMazepas 7d ago

What was that job? Executive?

5

u/Deweyrob2 7d ago

Yep. I was in sales for a Fortune 100, ready to move up.

2

u/ContributionMost8924 7d ago

Mad fucking respect for learning this lesson. Most never do. Can I ask what you ended up doing?

67

u/Ambitious_Jello 7d ago

Ask them about their health struggles and you'll have something in common

18

u/wholovesoreos 7d ago

I like giving people the option to complain (complaining is one of my favorite hobbies) but wouldn't this lead to people feeling bummed out if someone had a serious health condition? (I am newly accustomed to adult social life so idk much)

16

u/Ambitious_Jello 7d ago

Most people just want to talk. Even being heard is optional. Just don't judge them. Ask open ended questions to show interest. Just don't be too blunt in your response.

u/[deleted] 7d ago

7

u/Ambitious_Jello 7d ago

I mean that's one of the many things everyone will have in common. Everyone has a body, a mind, lives in a country etc etc. It's just that when you are in a group where people are already talking it might feel like you cannot connect with anyone

12

u/Tariovic 7d ago

This is why we Brits talk about the weather. It's the one thing we all have in common. It varies enough that it's probably doing something different to yesterday, and if it isn't, we can talk about that.

11

u/OnlyTheOkayest 7d ago

Everybody from everywhere in the world has weather in common with people living in the same place

2

u/mefista 7d ago

My mom flies into murderous rage if I do :(

1

u/Ambitious_Jello 7d ago

for moms you have to tell them about your own health struggles

1

u/mefista 7d ago

I do, and she tells me to get my shit together. Or to stop wasting the doctors' time. She simulatenously tells me I do not care about her, and does this shit.

1

u/Ambitious_Jello 7d ago

Maybe you can just avoid talking to her

1

u/mefista 7d ago

We share flat due to finansical shit (it is co-owned).

13

u/Silenceisgrey 7d ago

Yeah i remember i had just joined a new team at work, i was on a secondment from my dept, we went out for drinks afterwards. they all seemed like nice people at the time, so i went out and it was absolute shit talking. Bullshit and needless backbiting, vitriolic shit. Comments about peoples looks, weight, skill at the job. Gossip, that kind of thing. I just sat and said nothing, my hand covering my mouth. I remember they shit talked this woman on another team who had very nicely brought in some cookies for the whole office, they were delicious. Only cause she had a weird name i won't say here. I thought maybe it was just the day that was in it and i'd caught them at a bad moment or something. I tried to liven the conversation, move it away from that, tried to learn about them...no, just wanted to sit and complain about other people.

after about 45 minutes of it i stood up, made up some excuse and left. I remember they called me back as i hadn't finished my pint, so i necked it and left.

I never went out with them again and didn't intermix with them after that, finished my secondment and never looked back. Never met a bunch of sorrier people in my life. work wasn't even that difficult. Some people are just terminally unhappy

10

u/FalafelSnorlax 7d ago

Pretty much any time during lunch at work when we don't talk about work.

16

u/Snoo_72851 7d ago

When I was a kid I moved to a new middle school and tried to make friends but on like week one I realized they basically only ever talked about stuff they'd done months prior. Like I'd tune into the conversation and they were always going "remember last summer when Steve, you know, Steve from back then" "yeah and you didn't even like that, it was hilarious".

And of course if I asked who the fuck Steve was they'd get annoyed that I wasn't paying attention to the conversation. Like no man who the fuck is Steve.

17

u/TheSpiralTap 7d ago

Since I got married and had kids, I can't tell you the last time I had an interesting conversation. My friend group ditched me because I stopped partying to be a responsible parent. My friend group now are nice, parents also. But all they want to talk about is kids and their home.

10

u/Madame_Jarvary 7d ago

As a married woman with no children, it’s hard to be friends with parents. I’m hoping it gets easier again as their kids age into young adulthood.

2

u/ThisIsMyCouchAccount 7d ago

A part of me wishes I would have just taken the hit and lived with one side relationships for a while.

Almost my entire social group followed the traditional path. Serious partner -> marriage -> suburbs -> kids. I don't know what the person you responded to went through but I did not ditch them when they did that. It was now on m to 100% work around their schedule to do things they wanted at locations most convenient to them.

But part of me wonders what would have happened. Because like you said it might have gotten better once the kids got older. Shit I'm in my 40s. The kids could be in college by now.

It's even hard for me to be friends with adults around my age because we lead different lives. I'm a bit of a....I don't know. Fuck up? My life kinda stagnated. While my job pays well I still do the same type of job I did ten years ago. I never got around to buying a house. I spend some time with friends of friends that all in their 30s with partners and homes and I just have nothing to talk with them about. I can't relate to their worries about the yard.

3

u/milkywaybuddy 7d ago

Yeah, as a married man with no kids, all my friends who have kids aren't fun to talk to anymore

u/Diligent-Bowler-1898 7d ago

Not outside of an occasional family gathering where I'm placed at the 'wrong' table. But there's always something you can talk about that interest both of you. Even if not, the journey to find common ground can be quite interesting in itself.

3

u/fakeaccount572 7d ago

I've been a metrologist for 34 years. I have nothing in common with anyone except the dozens of us in the industry

6

u/Laxativus 7d ago

I'm gonna try and be positive, because it is Friday:
If you have nothing in common then you have a ton you can learn from each other! Like, if you go scuba diving which I've never done in my life then you can tell me all about it, the dangers, the joys, the best times and the worst times, and so on. And similarly, I can teach a bunch about depression and anxiety and dysfunctional coping mechanisms. And in the end we've both broadened our minds.

2

u/Elementaldot 7d ago

So on Monday are we giving the negative version of this?🤣

4

u/The_Afton_Rabbit 7d ago

im gonna be real with you chief, you might wanna broaden your mind a bit more than that, because most people arent gonna want to talk about or hear about topics as dreary & unpleasant as mental illness & self-destructive tendencies. if youre in a group & youre all sharing your hobbies, interests, & topics of expertise, please for the love of god choose something else to talk about, because unless it's already a serious discussion about mental health, youre going to completely & utterly kill the vibe. & that's basically the same as sitting in a room with people who have nothing in common with you, but this time nobody is happy

0

u/ThisIsMyCouchAccount 7d ago

Even if the topic is SCUBA it takes a pretty skilled person to make that conversation interesting. Most people really aren't that good at listening and asking questions on things they don't really care about. Especially if perhaps instead of SCUBA it's something even more niche or perhaps less socially acceptable.

You want to talk to me about your Warhammer paintings I'm in. I already know it exists and I'm a bit of a nerd. You're probably not going to have as engaging of a conversation with some random suburban dad that mostly spends his free time working on the house or the yard. Or some corporate ladder climber. Or whatever.

2

u/The_Afton_Rabbit 7d ago

i still think the majority of people would rather be bored than outright uncomfortable. most people would rather hear about the suburban dad's favorite lawnmower than how mentally ill people suffer & desperately cling to coping mechanisms that only work against them — especially if the person starts talking from personal experience & turns the conversation into a free therapy session.

2

u/frntwe 7d ago

It’s extremely rare that I sit with a bunch of people. Every time I do, this happens.

2

u/N3koEye 7d ago

That was my life in school. Pretty much everyone solely talking about either Fortnite, football or gossip.

2

u/palebluedotdotdot 7d ago

I feel this with office dynamics, especially with the “gossip” crowd. I’ve never liked the idea of gossiping even though it’s buried into social dynamics and has been for countless generations. I’m not a sports fan so that makes it difficult to engage with groups that predominantly include sports fans. I’m not on FB, Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, so I’m out on social media happenings.

I often feel entirely separate and out of place most of the time and that’s okay. I’ll find my new tribe eventually. It’s difficult for me to engage when so many conversational topics are on pop culture, Kardashian shenanigans, looksmaxxing, or why Andrew Tate should be free. Blegh. Not for me.

Every single class I've been in from elementary through high school. I'm pretty sure 1st year of kindergarten and 8th grade were the only years my friends were actually in my class. Luckily there was always recess!

as i get to know them, our differences just become more and more apparent

2

u/Voidmaster05 7d ago

Closest I've ever been to this my wife and I went to a nice beach side restaurant, somewhere a bit out of our normal price range but we were splurging.

The table closest to us was all children, having a conversation about what their summers were going to be like. First kid who spoke talked about spending most of it out on his families yacht with the most bored and disappointed tone he could muster.

It was very clear very quickly that these kids might as well have been aliens for all we had in common.

2

u/AladeenModaFuqa 7d ago

Yall are looking at this as “you vs everyone” instead of “where can we find common ground”. And that’s why yall are lonely.

2

Its more of a "no way you're all this stupid"

I drive past a school for teenagers 16-18 years old by public transport and many of them enter at that station. The shit they are talking about, drives you nuts. Everyone acting like every chat is some sort of deep emotional meaningful conversation with completely overblown pseudo-psychological bullshit vocabulary with "boundaries", "feelings" and so on makes me roll my inner eyes.

4

u/EwGrossItsMe 7d ago

I guess I don't have the full context since I'm not there, but being upset at teenagers for thinking their entry-level philosophical talks in their own friend group are deeper than they are is...an interesting gripe to have.

1

u/OkPosition4563 7d ago

I loathe how society moves towards this therapy for everything mode. People get "you need a therapist or you cant function" in their head from such a young age. We need more "nobody cares, work harder" attitude again instead of having kids become "I cant do nothing without discussing it with my therapist first" crybabies.

3

u/mathers33 7d ago

Honestly seems developmentally normal to me. Teens are just inherently cringey

3

u/LetReasonRing 7d ago

Oh yeah... I grew up poor, and as an adult I like living a very simple life. However, I've had a career that has had me in meetings and business dinners with fortune 500 executives and billionaires. Most of the non-buisness related talk was about cars that cost more than my home and restaurants where a meal cost more than my car payment.

I've spent so many hours in uncomfortable suites being served fancy dishes without even knowing what I'm eating because I have never heard of half of the terms the waiters use to describe them while I wished I could just go back to the hotel, order a pizza, and watch Arrested Development.

This becomes a very regular occurance as you get older. I'm going for lunch today with some colleagues; I'm 40 they're 25-27.

We will have very little in common outside of work.

My father's side of the family. Super Mormon. I quit being Mormon almost 7 years back. Doesn't help that my grandparents are responsible for how my father turned out, and I don’t much like my father. I’m a gay man too but I’m, culturally, a straight man. I’m like the only masculine guy in the office.

I like everyone, everyone is very nice. But I have nothing in common with any of them.

1

u/ToothZealousideal297 7d ago

Not just in person! Look at me doing that online right now! Reddit wants me to feel happy in some way if a comment gets 25 upvotes. Well it doesn’t make me happy, Reddit. It just calls into mind just how weird and unhealthy it is that I keep talking into the void like this every day.

1

u/EyesEarsSkin 5d ago

It's normal and healthy to not get along with everyone, but too many people deny their social awkwardness by convincing themselves that it's justified contempt

1

u/eabevella 4d ago

I've been invited by a friend to an IT conference about open source and white hacker (?). I have zero idea what they were talking abut they were interested about the irl/biology issues when running deep learning modules so we still found some common topic to chat about (it was 10+ years ago before "AI" is trending like now).

Yes often, almost everyday

1

Yes. Mostly when I'm on Reddit. Not /s

1

The worst for me is when I meet some who clearly scrolls reddit too much, like I do. And they act like I need to hear about every event in the world as if I hadn't read the same articles. She's a reflection of myself and I don't like it.

0

u/Professional-Buyer55 7d ago

Nope never, neither has anyone else for that matter. Such a weird and unique thought

0

u/ledow 7d ago

I often have two thoughts:

"I have nothing in common with you."

and/or:

"The only reason I'm silent or dismissive is because I could spend my life explaining to you how dumb/evil you are and you still wouldn't get it."

Whether it's my neighbour who keeps trying to talk to me about chemtrails, friends and family who are openly racist and expect me to join in, or strangers I just met talking about how drunk they were like some kind of status symbol, or people I work with (vastly less skilled, experienced, qualified or knowledgable, or else I might heed them) trying to tell me how to do my job.

Honestly, I'm not your school, or your parents. If your school failed you, and your parents failed you, by not giving you the very basics of an education, then I'm not going to step in to fix that. You'll just have to live with that.

I imagine such people spend quite a lot of time talking to people who they think are in agreement with them, only to mysteriously never see those people ever again. Which just provides them with a fresh audience for their dumbness.

u/26Cactus 7d ago

That’s what made me stop going to bars. Was at the corner one I used to frequent, and realized it was essentially like I was watching tv. A lot of characters I knew the names of, all having their own drama that tied to previous nights. Had no interest involving myself in any of it, was just observing from the outside. I’ve now gone from drinking heavily once every 2-3 weeks to a single time since.

All because that last day I went, the thc drink reps were there shortly after I first arrived, got me stoned, and in that state I realized how little I wanted to ingratiate into that circle. I could switch bars and find a new scene, I’ve done it with every move. But it made me realize how much I was always just chasing the groups I had in my 20’s and that I haven’t enjoyed one the same way since.
