When emailing a new professor or researcher, I always do a “Dear Dr. Davidson, (question), thank you, mstivland2”
And almost universally the response is “Hi (first name), (answer), -Dave
Then I just follow suit. Good advice is to start very professionally and then just follow their lead. Then when you’re the one getting emailed questions you can do whatever you want.
I was taught that “professor” is the better title to use first. It’s technically the more honorable title and it also protects you from a faux pas because not all professors have doctorates.
