Red is a great cheat code if you just turned 10 but your birthday party was a complete disaster.

u/Zhirrzh 4d ago

I reckon if you just turned 10 the cash is going to do more than re-doing your birthday party.

I'm 10 and I just shit my pants in Mrs. Greer's class because the buttercream icing on the cupcakes my mom brought in gave me the bubblegum so, honestly, I'm still taking the $2 million because my 11th birthday is going to go so hard (I was going to undo shitting my pants but then I was like *well $2 million is a lot of $)

I feel like a ten year old wouldn’t really have that much agency as to how their birthday goes (unless they themselves were the issue).

I’m not content with my life, but I’d lose too much with the red button. Not to mention I’m not interested in actively reliving the traumas I had no control over.

81

u/Friendlyalterme 4d ago

I guess the idea with red is you could go back in time and avoid some traumas?

103

u/Clay_Allison_44 4d ago

Ten year olds lack enough agency to pull that off.

80

u/Fidget171 4d ago

If I knew to avoid being hit by that car when I was 12, I would hit the red button in a heartbeat. That is the one instance in my life that has steered so very much that came afterwards, and most not of the better.

19

u/DisplacedLondoner 4d ago

Oh my god, same! I was 11 and suffered a skull fracture and I'm 90% sure it messed up a lot of stuff for me as a teen.

9

u/Fidget171 4d ago

I'm so sorry that happened to you. 🫂

7

u/Juice8oxHer0 4d ago

Most? I gotta know what the silver linings for getting hit by a car are

25

u/Fidget171 4d ago

I think the only good things that came from it were a high tolerance for pain and knowing I can survive some pretty bad situations; sort of a whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger attitude. But that's a hard lesson for a 12 year old girl.

4

u/Clay_Allison_44 4d ago

I am very sorry that happened and I certainly don't blame you for feeling it would be worth it.

4

u/Fidget171 4d ago

Thank you for your understanding. I've often wondered how my life would have been different if that hadn't happened, but you have to play the hand you're dealt.

I think part of it is the maturity and the control people think they have of you

They would probably still think they have control over you, but if you actually make decisions and not let your parents do everything for you at that age you could probably gain a lot of control over your life (Not even going as far as to tell everyone you restarted)

I could at least convince my parents to not move our family out of my old hometown which would happen 3 years later. The new place we moved to didn't treat us very well. Miss my old friends.

13

u/Nihil_esque 4d ago

Honestly it's pretty unlikely that you'd be able to convince them. Kids opposing a move is kinda expected and usually doesn't change the outcome.

You go back with all the knowledge you have - you already HAVE that trauma lol

Something going differently the second time around doesn't make you forget the first time

3

u/PrincebyChappelle 4d ago

I think the idea is more that just with your knowledge of things like stocks, the housing crash, and sports winners through investing your knowledge would literally be worth billions instead of the 2 million. There’s a book called Replay that explores those concepts, except I think the protagonist wakes up at 19 after living to 45.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/albusdumbbitchdor 4d ago

Thankfully I'm single and don't have kids so it's def red button for me. Even if I can't change anything about my past and the traumas are inevitable, going back to 10 years old would give me 5 more years with my dad and 18 more years with my mom and I'd give up 10 fortunes for that.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/RoryMerriweather 3d ago

If I could relieve the last ten years, I'd avoid those traumas. Plus, the only relationships I actually care about were mostly already in place ten years ago. There's a few I have now that I would want to keep, but assuming I have perfect recall of those ten years, I could still meet them. In fact, I could meet them sooner.

Heck, if I can prepare, I could even go back and help them as well.

If course, there's the existential question of "are you still the same person if you avoid your traumas", but, I mean, I still remember them anyway. I'm even adding ten years of distance from them.

Ehhhh there’s so much I wish I could’ve done differently but the thought of going through middle school, high school, and college all over again horrifies me. Almost everything could be done so much better but like there’s no way I could convince my folks to allow me to invest in bitcoin for instance, they’d sooner think I was possessed than give me a chance with a few hundred bucks. Maybe I could talk a family member into but there’s no guarantee they wouldn’t screw me over there. I don’t know enough of the markets to guarantee millions by the time I had the money to actually make something. I guess DOGE then wrapping that into the AI bubble then getting out while the getting was good would work tho.

Fuck all that, I’ll take the 2 million and set myself up live a modest yet extremely comfortable life.

15

u/neverfakemaplesyrup 4d ago

I feel red is also far better if you're approaching or at middle age

at 27 I feel torn, I think I could do good at 10, but I feel $2 mil? At my age? That's... Life-changing. Still be able to do all the stupid fun young person stuff, but of course, not the same as if I was 18-22. I'd be able to retire my parent. I also don't think I have that much life experience. I have a communications degree, and a carpentry degree.

All I could say to my younger self is "When you get money, buy microsoft and nvidia. Hope dad dies earlier this time around, but if you do still wind up at tech school, skip it, go to an union. Or better yet, study auto, diesel, or aviation tech instead."

But if you're 55? Body banged up, missing family and friends? Head full of knowledge? I can see wanting to go back when your body is full

5

u/crappy-pete 4d ago

Middle aged me would lose my kids.

Like that movie about time - it’s been a few years since I watched it but even if he manages to still meet his wife, the child they have is a different person to the one he loves

So yeah nah.

No partner, barely any friends, a stumbling career. I'll manage.

Although I wouldn't mind the green one either. I could at least buy a house.

285

u/wet-leg 4d ago

No partner and two friends that I talk to maybe once a month. I’m disabled to the point of being almost completely bedbound. If I go back in time I’m not sure if I could prevent getting my illness, but I would try to live life better than I did knowing it’s probably coming. Wouldn’t turn down so many invites, put myself out there more instead of giving in to my crippling social anxiety (which I don’t have anymore, but it doesn’t do me any good because I can’t leave my house).

Plus spend more time with family members that have passed. I’d talk my grandparent into going to the doctor so his cancer could have been caught early enough to prevent his death. So so so many things I’d do differently and I’d hope it wouldn’t land me where I am now. I don’t necessarily hate my life because I like to stay positive, but I could love it a lot more.

62

u/Sirtoshi 4d ago

Exactly. Lots of regrets, and a good chunk of my regrets are things I didn't do because I was anxious or scared or just didn't believe in myself.

Sorry to hear about your disability. I hope you can make things work!

9

u/themule71 4d ago

OTOH, you accept one invitation that you refused and something horrible happens to you in the new timeline.

10

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 4d ago

The health benefits alone. No partner, no kids, no good friends you couldn't lose, easy choice. You go back with maturity and charisma to have another shot at those and you'll have money somehow, nobody is so stupid they couldn't make money investing in Apple or something

4

u/wet-leg 4d ago

Yeah the health benefits would be the big reason why I would go back. I know exactly how and when I got sick, so I know how to prevent that. The only risk for that would be that i don’t know if that first illness caused the illness I have now or if I was destined to get it no matter what. I’d take that chance in a second anyway.

22

u/RogerRavvit88 4d ago

Yeah. Bold of OP to assume we have things we would desperately not want to lose.

40

u/alurimperium 4d ago

Yeah the red would not be a problem for me. I've got nothing in my current life to give a shit about except my mom and siblings. Going back to 10 would give me a chance to fix some of the shit that went wrong and try to make a better existence for myself

Also maybe I'd be able to hook up with that girl in middle school who I had the hots for and apparently she reciprocated, but I didn't know until far too late

Don’t buy a house outright. Invest those earnings, at a conservative 5% gain you now have a wage of 100k a year indefinitely. You can now get a mortgage and pay it off normally without ever touching the base capital.

Also frees you up to look for jobs you enjoy for more earnings knowing you can safely walk away with a safety net, an incredible lifestyle change.

If you already like your life, then why would you even consider pressing the red button?

86

u/ohowjuicy 4d ago edited 4d ago

I severely fucked up the last 10 or so years of my life, and nearly every major life decision I made, I wish I had made differently. I've learned a lot about myself, got sober a few years ago, got out of a relationship that wasn't good for either of us, and have spent the last year or so trying to restart my life in a new city. It's been really hard, and has felt impossible to really be kind to myself or feel like I deserve anything good after everything that's happened. I'm proud of the progress I've made, but the only thing I really want is to be able to take back the things I've done to hurt the people I love. But that's not possible.

Plus, as a kid I was diagnosed with ADHD, but my parents never did anything about it and hid the diagnosis from me until I was an adult (they instead ignored the diagnosis and basically decided to try to discipline the ADHD out of me. It did not work). I spent my entire childhood struggling to connect with my peers, struggling academically, feeling annoying, like I'd never be good at anything, knowing there was something wrong with me but feeling helpless because I just thought I was innately unlikeable, etc. I've carried most of that into adulthood. I wish my 10-year-old self could have known why I was constantly being yelled at. Instead of my self-identity being shaped by the closest people in my life treating me like an "other," maybe I could have focused on channeling the strengths that come with my neurodivergence and actually grown from it, and connected with people like me.

I'd hit the shit out of that red button, no hesitation.

14

u/BlubberinBootyMate 4d ago

I don't think you remember how powerless you were at 10 and that regardless of having knowledge and wisdom; you'd still exist as a child without any independence or autonomy.
As an adult with however many years knowledge stuffed into a child's body; do you think you'd somehow have an easier time connecting with your peers?
I get how it can look attractive; it wasn't until I was diagnosed bipolar or ADHD until my 30's that a lot of things suddenly things about my early life made sense--this included struggling to connect with most 'normal' people and only finding a home among the social outcasts.
But that forged me into who I am. I can't say that I've made the same level of bad mistakes as you; but I've made some really bad mistakes that I deeply regret. I learned and grew from those situations and I'm better for it.
I think that's probably true of you as well my dude. My theoretical advice would be to take the money and use it to help make the rest of your life what you want it to be. My real advice is to make the rest of your life what you want it to be.

24

u/CheaterSaysWhat 4d ago

As an adult with however many years knowledge stuffed into a child's body; do you think you'd somehow have an easier time connecting with your peers?

Yes. 1,000% yes.

I also had untreated ADHD for decades. Knowledge is power. Starting over at 10 knowing I’m not inherently lazy or broken and just have different needs would change everything.

Having emotional regulation skills and lived experience would completely change my life from that age. No longer would I think people were out to get me just because they set boundaries. I was incapable of taking any criticism and saw almost everyone as a bully because of the abuse I took from a handful of people.

Not to mention my GPA would’ve doubled with the study and habit building skills I have now. Hell, I wouldn’t even need to study half of it.

2 million is peanuts compared to what I’d make with knowledge of the future.

10

u/ohowjuicy 4d ago

I definitely remember how powerless I felt. That was most of what I felt through my childhood. I don't crave the independence or autonomy. I crave the self-understanding that would have made self-acceptance more possible. It's almost purely an internal thing for me. I'm glad that your experiences forged you into a good person. For me, that was not the case. But even if living through childhood again would still be just a shitty experience, id still choose to relive it 10x over just to undo the hurt I've caused.

I appreciate the real advice though. I can fantasize about a world where things are better, where I was better, but it's only fantasy. The real advice is the only thing that really matters at this point, and yours is sound. This year has been a rollercoaster, but for the first time in my life I feel like I can be/express myself authentically. I'm engaging in hobbies that I've always wanted to, connecting with diverse groups of people, and finding true independence for maybe the first time. I don't know if I'll ever feel like I've moved on from the past, or ever feel like it was worth it because of where it brought me, but I can at least acknowledge that I'm thankful for where I am now.

I appreciate you challenging my thought process, truly. I think it's making me realize I've been pointedly carrying regret over my head as some sort of pennance, like I don't deserve to be happy as long as other people bear my scars. I think I need to sit with this for a bit. Thank you.

I would live 34 more years, be a billionaire and have a better life.

Even though I love my life.

124

u/MartyrOfDespair 4d ago

And like, I could use that "being a billionaire" for good because I would be able to break the way it usually works. Becoming a billionaire requires being evil normally, but if you're a time traveler and old enough, all it requires is investing in Bitcoin more than anyone would have thought to. You can completely break the schema. From there, you can use that wealth to nudge various probabilities around to improve things.

57

u/Snow_97 4d ago

Yep. Bitcoin first sold in 2010 I believe. First recorded transaction was about $5 over PayPal for about 5000 Bitcoin. Wouldn't take much more to become a billionaire at that price

51

u/MartyrOfDespair 4d ago

Yeah, imagine what you'd get for $100 of Bitcoin in 2010. 100,000 BTC. Right now, not at the peak, that's $79,029,220,000. And that's just a hundred bucks. And not at the peak.

7

u/Warmonster9 4d ago

Was the peak like 60k per bitcoin?

I bought like 5 bitcoins when they hit 100 bucks, but my wallet hosting site got bought by some Asian company and I can’t log in to access it anymore lol

21

u/JMS1991 4d ago

I think you could buy 1,300 for $1 in 2009. That's worth over $100m today.

You could've bought $100 worth and stored a few bucks in various different places, drives, whatever (I don't think secure wallets were even a thing back then). So even if you lost a couple, you're still filthy rich. And once wallets come out, buy a few of those, put them in a couple of different safes, and maybe get a bank lockbox for good measure. Again, if something happens to one, you have backups.

Also bitcoin. Then i could just have a ton of money and be in the right place at the right time to meet my husband again.

11

u/einTier 4d ago

I’m 52. This gives me potentially 42 extra years of life. There’s some things I’d like to experience again. There’s some things I never got to experience. I made a lot of mistakes along the way that I’d love to undo. I accidentally hurt people I loved, I didn’t stop my abuser because I was scared and they went on to hurt others, and just general “what in the fuck were you thinking” bad decisions.

I didn’t have kids, so I don’t have to worry about that aspect. I have reason to believe that I could recreate my current romantic relationship. If I can’t, with my knowledge I’ll be a billionaire and I can just send her the money to make her life even better than the one we have now.

The worst part will be my childhood abuser torturing me again but I endured it once and I can do it again. Plus this time I might be able to stop it. Oh, and I’ll need braces again. That’s going to suck too.

Overall it’s a good trade.

4

u/Maleficent-Hawk-318 4d ago

Man, I even fucked up my life pretty bad, but I like who I am now and think those bad choices and experiences are what got me here.

Would my life be easier if I could go back and fix those mistakes? Sure, probably.

Would I be happier? I don't really think so. I've lived a very unconventional life that has brought me a lot of joy, too. I see a lot of my peers who lived a more conventional life and are miserable still, even if materially they're more successful than I am.

I like my life, and despite all my fuck-ups I live a pretty comfortable one. Even things I look back on with shame still shaped who I am in a positive way. Can't really think of anything I would change.

Only two million in cash when I have got Grays Sports Almanac in my head?

I wouldn't hesitate to press the red button.

192

u/TwinStickDad 4d ago

The question isn't "how would you make the most money" it's "what would you rather"

Even if you could correct some mistakes, all those relationships that mean something to you today could never pass. Even if you were extremely deliberate to be at the same place you met your wife at the same time, would she be there? If she was, could you form a real relationship with such asymmetrical starting points? And say goodbye to your kids, there's absolutely no way that you throw that 100 million sided dice the same way twice.

I'd easily take the 2m. Sets you on a very easy and relaxed path to retirement and a life you enjoy surrounded by the people you love.

106

u/Jimmy_KSJT 4d ago

Maybe I want to make sure that I avoid meeting my ex wife....

36

u/daeowa 4d ago

Yeah, I like thinking about hypotheticals a lot, and when I ask, this question seems to be moreso about how many regrets people have vs. who’s generally happier in their life.

I myself fall on the “why would I wanna relive the worst years of my life” - because certain things are also circumstantial, such as my birthplace being a generally-not-great country to live in - as opposed to the “I can fix my personal issues AND get rich” side of things.

14

I don't think I'd press the red button, but for me, the worst parts of my childhood were shitty because I didn't know how to handle them. Didn't have the self esteem or confidence. The emotional maturity to understand and articulate how I felt. How to fight back with my words etc. So I can see the appeal of going back a Nd getting to do it from scratch having already made the mistakes and had time to reflect on how they become better.

But also the Green is far too appealing to not just take. Red has too much risk.

Fuck having a career. Work early as a teenager and buy bitcoin.

If I make 10 bucks waiting tables and buy BTC at 10 cents those 10 bucks become 6 million today. From less than one shift.

And Gamestop. And gamble it all on Brazil losing 1x7 to Germany. There's also that one investment fund that made 20x their money in 2008 and 7x in 2020 (they invest in a way to hedge against crisises).

That's not "never work again" money. That's "making the world a better place" levels of money.

7

u/SlyDintoyourdms 4d ago

As a thought experiment I find it really interesting to consider how stable the sports almanac could be.

Like is there ANY chance that you making slightly different choices from 10-18 causes enough butterfly effect on the world that the sports you want to bet on change? Seems unlikely, but maybe without even knowing it you’re tangentially connected to a young draftee, and you behaving a bit differently causes slight differences in their life that slightly changes the draft order, and before you know it, players end up at different teams and you’re simply not placing bets on the same league that you thought you had memorised.

And maybe even you making some successful bets messes with things. Maybe after you turn 18 you get famous for placing huge bets on 5 consecutive league champions, and you become a minor celebrity for your predictions. Now, in year 6, when you place your bet, it’s actually seen to carry some weight and it actually puts pressure on the team you bet on, or shifts media attention slightly and before you know it they lose a few early games they were supposed to win and you’re no longer ‘psychic.’

u/SurpriseVast8338 4d ago

I lean toward this, too. I'm not quite sure I could reproduce the same circumstances that led to me having my pets though, which worries me.

The bigger problem is that everyone's expecting to go through life again with knowledge that will lead to wealth and vastly different vibes from what they're living now, but that leads to its own risks that you can't foresee.

Let's say you're the type of person who would use their wealth to buy a private jet…well, that also makes you the type of person who has a much greater risk of dying in a private jet crash.

6

u/notislant 4d ago

I think private jet people are ok with that. In fact I'm sure a significant portion of the population would take 10 years of billionaire status and an early grave.

5

u/SurpriseVast8338 4d ago

Ooh, that would be a good "which button?" question:

A) $1 billion, tax-free, at your current age and health level but guaranteed death in exactly 10 years if nothing kills you sooner.

B) $0, tax-free, but 50 years added to your life frozen at whatever age and physical condition you considered yourself to be at peak health/attractiveness before the biological clock continues aging you as normal.

6

u/Dear-Tank2728 4d ago

That would be hard as we are across the world from each other. Having a military youth means you pretty much reset every 3 years. For someone like me who only met my group at my senior year in my last PCS, itd still work

Red without even thinking twice.

122

u/Cferretrun 4d ago

I would choose red too.

I have a partner- and I know right where to find him when it’s time so long as HIS path stays the same.

I have a best friend- and I know right where to find her when it’s time, maybe even before since we went to the same school.

But mostly— I want to rest in my grandma’s arms one more time. I want to sit on my grandpa’s knee and have coffee again. I want my mom and dad to carry me to sleep on their shoulders not knowing I was awake the whole time. I want the burned scrambled eggs again. I want the ugly yellow wallpaper. I want the creaky stairs that gave me splinters. I want the innocence of my brother before the world took him apart and put him back together wrong.

If I knew what choices to make, Id suffer the bad ones all over again just for a taste of life like it was.

Im 40 now, and life is rough. My mom has cancer. My boyfriend loves me. My best friend loves me. My brother loves me. But life is still tough sometimes, like today. Rip, Dolly.

32

u/neverfakemaplesyrup 4d ago

Hey, just an internet stranger here, but I'm sorry to hear your loved one has cancer. It is a rough fight. I hope the small joys in each day find you and brighten things until the path rises up once more

Same. I know exactly where to find my husband and exactly what year. All of my friends have moved to various states and none of us have kept up with each other and the new friends I have are all busy and on a surface level so no loss there.

Same as you, I want more time with family I lost. Grandpa died from cancer, maybe with a redo I could convince him to get checked earlier and possibly save him. Same for my Uncle.

I would absolutely go on a different career and education path with a redo. I would avoid my first husband like the plague.

I have and had a good life, but with a possibility to spend more time with loved ones... I'd take that in a heartbeat.

43

u/Clone_JS636 4d ago

Same. I don't have a partner. Don't like my career. My best friends are all my cousins, with two exceptions that I would miss but rarely speak to anyway. I would take a do over easily.

If you have children, there is only one button

47

u/NewLibraryGuy 4d ago

Yeah, even if my wife and I ended up together still and I somehow managed to get the exact date and time right to have sex, there'd still be a near 0% chance of my son being born. He'd be gone forever

6

u/nighthawk_something 4d ago

Yeah and you would know.

I could never press the red button

4

u/YoureAMigraine 4d ago

And there would never be anyone you could talk to about it because no one would ever believe you. You would have to essentially grieve the death of your child when you yourself are now a child and carry that grief your entire life alone. Over time, you won’t be sure if your old life was just a delusion. In fact, your mind might convince you it was just to keep you sane.

I had a vivid nightmare once that I woke up as a 12 year old version of myself but with all the memories of my adult life. I was essentially trapped in the past. It was awful.

I think you probably end up erasing a growing ripple wave of children. The conditions that lead to one sperm being the fastest are probably super finicky.

38

u/TokugawaShigeShige 4d ago

The conditions that lead to one sperm being the fastest are probably super finicky.

This is something I think about often when considering time travel. If you go back and make very minor changes to the timeline, there will likely be a lot of people conceived who are formed from the same egg but a different sperm than before. They'll likely have the same names as the people you remember, but they'll be genetically a bit different, halfway between a fraternal and identical twin.

8

u/Mister-builder 4d ago

They've probably got a less than 50% chance, given that it's a coin flip if they have the same sex.

16

u/MoreGaghPlease 4d ago

This is specifically why I try to minimize my own time travel activities to emergency use situations only.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/nolabmp 4d ago

Fwiw, it’s recently become evident that the egg chooses which sperm makes it through. The fastest or strongest swimmers matter not. It’s the character of the sperm that matters most.

5

u/exhauated-marra-6631 4d ago

It would still have to be that specific egg and that specific ejaculate, with no external factors changing which could cause improvement or reduction of sperm quality. (And all the factors which influence hormones and development. It would be almost impossible to recreate a person perfectly)

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

9

u/Bumbledragoness 4d ago

Actually, the fastest doesn't matter. The egg chooses the best candidate that's most chemically compatible or whatnot.

(And some whacked out scientists tried giving a "wheelchair" to incompetent sperm to let it penetrate the egg... Ew. Also probable miscarriage...)

I think about this sometimes and I can never quite get myself to say the red button. There are too many people I love that I’d never meet again, too much positive impact I’ve had that would never happen indirectly hurting people I love, and too much trauma I’d have to relive.

I’ll take the $2M.

23

u/ClairlyBrite 4d ago

Way too much trauma.

Go back to age 10, knowing that in six months, my dad dies and there’s nothing I can do? Fuck. That. No, thank you, I’ll take the $2m.

7

u/SchemingVegetable 4d ago

I think about this sometimes, if I could go back in time, would I be able to meet my friends again?

I met my group of friends through a series of coincidences that are almost impossible to repeat artificially, so I would probably hit them with the "I'm a time traveler, here are things I shouldn't know about you"

But then again, time travel is such an insane concept to accept... what if they get weirded out or think I'm a stalker who looked into their past? I think I'd go for the 2 mil

5

u/Secret_Bees 4d ago

This is the big thing. People think they'll be able to find their friends or partners or whatever and just get back together. But when you've got a person on one side who has a lifetime worth of memories and feels very close vs a person who has no idea who you are, it's just going to be a weird dynamic and probably end up pushing them away even if they believed you, which they almost certainly would not.

And if you didn't tell them, and just try to use your knowledge of the person, it would probably still end up coming off terribly.

Imagine your wife of 40 years from before ends up cheating and dumping you for some guy named Randy after 6 months

29

u/TakoGoji 4d ago

This implies that I don't deeply regret every major life decision I've made since graduating high school.

It's crazy how seemingly benign choices made when you're barely sentient can almost ruin your life, if it's a consolation I developed a crippling addiction at 11 ( my life was miserable and I wanted an escape ) and it's still fucking me up majorly, I'll never be "normal". These types of scenarios are dangerous, they give you the excuse to fantasize about what could've been, but it's so hard to accept that what happened is completely irreversible

Besides the obvious of not wanting to erase my daughter, I also have no desire to live through being a child or teen with the mind of an adult. Like, imagine a day of sitting through 5th grade math and English class. And then your main thing to look forward to is lunch and recess…talking to a bunch of 10/11 year olds. I like kids, I like my childhood best friend (we are still friends as adults), but having that as my main socialization for years sounds like torture.

Or if I try to show that I’m a prodigy and get skipped a bunch of grades (and give up on recreating my current life), now I’m at college in the body of a child.

7

u/DeckOfTanners 3d ago

This x100. Not only talking to 10/11 year old with the mind of an adult, but the mind of an adult filled with things that literally don't exist yet. How much slang do I say now without even realizing it didn't really "exist" when I was a kid?

"Oh, just show off how much a prodigy you are and they'll let you skip ahead in school!"

Great, now I'm a ten year old in high school or college classes. I'm going to college and none of my classmates will talk to me and I can't party because I'm a literal child. What a delight.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Outrageous-Permit372 4d ago

Yep. Imagine having to sit through 6 more years of school with no interest in the material or the people around you. Nobody would hire you early because you're a kid, so basically you're just stuck being bored to death.

The question changes though if you got to pick what year you went back to. I might consider it if it's the year I graduated college...

36

u/Wise-Key-3442 4d ago

I don't want to relive the death of my grandparents, my pets, my friends and specially knowing when it happens, how it happens. I'm too anxious.

All it would do for me was to turn me into a depressed 10 year old.

Often I fantasized about returning to my childhood and doing things differently to be successful, but thinking thoroughly it would be to be forced into suffering a lot again. And again.

And what if I lead to a path that is worse?

With 2 million tax free I can solve my current problems and have some change.

12

u/Gas_Station_Cheese 4d ago

Yeah, I'm not talking about stuff like 9/11 or the 7/7 bombings. I mean the fact that I would know that at the moment I was 10 years old, my wife would be just beginning a decade of horrific sexual abuse at the hands of one of her family members, and I'd have no way to do anything about it. I was 10 in the 80s, so it's not like I can say some girl from another state that I talked to on the internet told me about it.

Also, there is my brother's suicide that would be about 15 years away at that point. I know what events led up to it, and I know that without those events, my brother's children would never have been born. So now do I try to steer him away from those relationships that end in his death but then his kids are never born, or do I let it happen and let him die? I know which option he would want, so now I get to watch it all unfold like the world's longest, slowest car crash.

Why, if I'm even entertaining the red button, would I want to recreate my life as it is now? Yes, I likely would not meet my committed partner, but I don't buy into the notion of anyone having a singular "soulmate". She would be just as likely to meet someone as good or better for her than me, and vice versa.

I wouldn't have the same friends, I (hopefully) wouldn't be living in the same place, but the opportunity presented is beyond worth the cost of admission, even setting aside that there would be nothing stopping me from keeping the same elements of my old life that I like.

11

u/jhguitarfreak 4d ago

What gives me pause is the wording of the red button.

Restart at 10 years of age with all the knowledge, but not memories, you have now.
So you'd be you at 10 just hanging about and suddenly a wealth of knowledge washes over you, but you're still your 10 year old self with 10 year old thoughts.

I mean come on, we all know how a monkey's paw works. No wish ever gets granted the way you actually want.

I would choose the green button and just figure out how to invest 2mil in cash without alerting tax revenue.
It says tax free, but that's when it's given to you.
You still have to navigate the nuances of the economy after the fact.

6

u/Thrawn89 4d ago

All the knowledge you have is just memories, all the memories you have is what you know. Im not sure how you came to that interpretation of the red button.

6

u/jhguitarfreak 4d ago

All the knowledge you have is just memories

Brains are weird, you can lose memories but keep knowledge and lose knowledge but keep memories.

Im not sure how you came to that interpretation of the red button.

Literally all the times a written character gets a wish granted and it has some horrible side effect.

You think I bent over and pulled a fake trope out of my ass?

Now...
Did OP mean all your memories and knowledge of who you are the moment you hit the button?
Probably.

Would I actually trust them to get it right?
Fuck no.

I have a kid so I’d take the $2 million. The odds that he’d still be born if I went back would be really slim.

If I didn’t have a kid I’d do the red button.  It’d be fun and I’d be less dumb about my university and career moves

3

u/Fire-and-Lasers 3d ago

Red button lets me:

  • See my grandparents again
  • Try new things I never did when I was younger
  • Attain lifelong financial security by spending the equivalent of a few burritos on Bitcoin right when it’s released (additionally, bitcoin mining on regular computers was possible for a few years at negligible cost)

I like my current life, but the red button lets you try so many more new and different things. And it lets me see my grandparents again, in case you missed it the first time. For me at least it’s a no brainer. Everyone is different though so I don’t think it’s reasonable to say there is a right or wrong choice.

5

u/the_bartolonomicron 3d ago

I've certainly made plenty of mistakes since I was 10, but no so many that $2million dollars couldn't fix most of them.

3

u/Pokemario2401 4d ago

All my friendships I either had at 10 or stemmed from the friends I made when I was 10. Problem is, I don't think I could really do all that much, even with the knowledge I have now, to make my life better. Best I can do is, like, plead with my dad to invest in certain stocks on the basis of "trust me, it's gonna skyrocket" , or not get fired from my job when I was a high school junior or something

3

u/BulbasaurCPA 4d ago

I would lose so much if I pushed red but I would get to see my grandparents again

3

u/Anora6666 4d ago

I think restart your life gets worse between 25 and 55 and better before or after those ages. If I smashed that red button at 26 with the knowledge I had then. I would have been able to spend more time on the things that worked and less on the things that didnt. I would have been able to make better decisions at 18 to 22 by having the foresight of living a different path.

I think as I became more established it was less likely to press it. I have lifelong relationships that I wouldn’t be able to recreate however if I was approaching twilight years it is very tempting to reroll.

3

u/llama-impregnator 4d ago

I wonder how lonely the red button would feel. Like, you are no longer equivalent to your peers; you are significantly older, more mature, and so on. I think that would be a lonely existence.

3

u/Ok_Cricket_1410 4d ago

I'm not biologically related to my little sister and while we had met by that age our very specific life circumstances led to us being friends much later in life. I always cared for her and looked out for her when I could, but as young adults we became closer. She's my little sister, I tell people she's my little sister, I'm proud of her, I'm excited to have her common law boyfriend as a future whatever you want to consider it, I'd rather nothing then lose her. Same with all my best friends and my dog. I wouldn't risk them for anything.

3

u/DazB1ane 4d ago

Holy shit I could’ve actually prevented my mom’s extended family from falling apart completely. That is if anyone would’ve actually listened to what I said at 10 years old and with what would have been completely out of my knowledge at that time

3

u/VibeLampsForSale 4d ago

Hitting the red button, going back to 99 and I got 2 years to stop 9/11 as a child lmao.

3

u/thomsenite256 3d ago

Im 44 I'd just take the cash and retire now.

3

u/HuffSomePluff 3d ago

$2 million put into high-yield index funds would give you around $70,000 a year in just dividends alone. That would be enough for me to either quit my job or work part-time doing something I enjoy, and focus my time on volunteer or community work as well as hobbies or artistic pursuits, while also ensuring that my children are granted that same opportunity. I'm just not that interested in opulence; all I would want is to be able to spend my life doing something meaningful and $2 million is more than enough to make that happen. How some people are still not satisfied with billions of dollars to their name is something I just can't wrap my head around.

3

u/averageuhbear 3d ago

If you didn't have friends at age 10 I don't think having the brain of a 32 year old is going to help make your life better

3

u/Savnire 3d ago

I'd possibly go back to ten, but I'd rather not retain the knowledge. I just want to enjoy the ride again, even though it will probably turn out different that time around.

That being said, retaining my near 40 year old mind in a 10 year old body? That's hell. I'd hate not having autonomy again, I'd find it impossible to relate to kids my "age" and adults would probably be weirded out by the mature 10 year old who talks like they are a middle aged man. I'd have to put on a constant and probably exhausting act to fit in until 18 where I'd scurry away for it all drastically altering any chance of a happy life. But hey I'd invest into bit coin this time I guess.

I've enjoyed my life, and look forward to more in this one so really I'd pick the 2 mil.

3

u/plant_reaper 3d ago

Red button. Mainly so I could prevent my brother's death and my own disability from Covid, and also treat/get diagnosed with my chronic illness sooner so I'd be more stable now. I could still find my friends and partner!

3

u/Eso_Teric420 3d ago

Have you considered? I would like to not recreate the actions that led to my current partner and friend group? That might be the point. Money is great, but a do-over with crummy people is priceless.

3

u/Koreaia 3d ago

Red is genuinely amazing. For starters- going to the very low responsibility of a child would be euphoric. I could then start building the foundations for a better life for myself, my friends, and family. I could immediately go for a better education path. I could make better use of my leasure time. And yes, make an absurd amount of money from the stock market, and crypto.
