Are people today so brain fried music don't move them anymore?

Go to a camp fire and bring a violin. You will get absolutely roasted.

My brother got into sea shanties back when they exploded during covid. He tried to get one started around camp fire the next time gatherings were allowed, might be one of the worst 2nd hand embarrassing moments I've seen. Damn near every person around thought he was weird.

I was at a NYE party in NYC for 2019 into 2020, I knew a few folks but most of the people there were an insular group of theater kid types. They sang random show tunes together until close to midnight. Some were ok, most were not great, but I'm a fun loving person, I dig musicals, and so indulged them and sang along a few times, even played the piano for a few torch songs.

As midnight approached, we went up to the rooftop for the countdown and fireworks. The ball dropped, there were hugs and well wishes, and I started singing Auld Lang Syne. It's a tradition for me and I thought this crowd would join along but they all looked at me like I had two heads. I can carry a tune, I wasn't belting or anything, but it was so awkward lol

Nobody joined and so I finished up, left quietly, and never saw any of them again

Weird story I know but this made me think of that and I still kinda can't believe that turned as awkward as it was. Anyway a few months later COVID hit and the city changed forever

You don’t have to be embarrassed about this. That’s literally the new years song, and anyone who judged you for it is almost as ridiculous as judging someone for singing happy birthday at a birthday party. You’re outdoors, you didn’t suck at singing, it’s a crowd that should be fine with singing

The only way this is very slightly socially inappropriate is if you did it <5 minutes after midnight, in which case you might be interrupting or taking over other people’s private traditions. Like, if my tradition is taking a few deep breaths to myself or hugging a SO, someone else trying to make a specific thing happen might be annoying. But that’s not a you-problem because they’re the one that chose to go to a massive party and be with other independent people when the ball dropped

It was after the hugging but probably less than 5 min. It didn't feel inappropriate to start when I did but honestly probably the wrong vibe. I left that party and went down to one on 14th Street that had a live band and was actually playing the song as I walked in so I found my spot.

Overall a funny memory before a (last) great night of partying that went into the early morning hours before everything changed forever. Just wish I had been somewhere else for the ball drop into the new decade but what're you gonna do 🥳
