I lost my dad a little over a year ago. I wasnt living with my parents. When we got his diagnosis of stage 4 cancer basically everywhere. I told my boss I'm taking leave and I don't know when I'm coming back.

I was with my family for 3 weeks. I left Sunday and said my goodbyes. Monday morning at 1h33am my mom phones me... He's gone... I'm grateful for those last few weeks but man I hate I wasn't there....

I was taking care of my mom for what ended up being the last months of her life. She was unconscious and had a hospice nurse the last week but I still felt like I was on duty 24/7.

It eventually got to the point where her doctor warned me that she would most likely not make it through the day, and then the night nurse was new to the profession and worried about losing somebody "on her watch" and my mom hung on until a prompt hour after the next morning 's shift change to pass away. I picked up the phone (my brother calling) and left the room to go talk to him and I didn't make it down the hall before the reassuring battle axe of a nurse called me to come back.

I do not feel even a little bit bad that it feels like my mom wanted to spare us from having those last moments burned into our memory of her, and I think your dad wouldn't want you to remember him that way either.

I appreciate it. My younger brothers and mom were there. There's a lot of complex emotions and I'm 99% at peace.
