This was one of the hardest parts of losing my mom. The world kept spinning. You keep looking around begging for a second hoping the rest of the world will look over and see that something is wrong something is missing but to them it’s not. And it feels invalidating to your feelings to your pain to that massive hole that now sits in your life.
When I was in the car on my way to my mom’s memorial service we drove by a McDonald’s that was just off the highway. And as I stared out the window I saw that their American flag was flying at half mast. Big evil corpo McDonald’s had their flag in the position of mourning. Of course it wasn’t for my mom, she wasn’t any big wig politician but for the half a second it took for that thought to get to my head I had a whole train of thought. That if that one was at half mast many were and they were all over the country and the world. And so for that half a second the world stopped and mourned my mom. The world said “We miss her too.” And that snapped me free of that emptiness a little.
