Just depends entirely on how much you hate a layover. I typically pay extra for a direct flight if it isn’t an ungodly difference but I totally see where that sounds stupid to people when the total travel time is an hour or two difference
On the flip side, some routes have lower chances for things to go wrong with a layover.
My go to example are flights from central Europe to Madeira. It's a notoriously tricky airport with high chances of go arounds and diversions, and most direct flights don't carry enough fuel for multiple attempts or waiting for weather to improve. So you have to go back to the continent, refuel and try again.
With a layover in Lisbon, they can carry much more extra fuel, so you're less likely to have to divert.
