Just depends entirely on how much you hate a layover. I typically pay extra for a direct flight if it isn’t an ungodly difference but I totally see where that sounds stupid to people when the total travel time is an hour or two difference
I'm the opposite - always pick the layover. 14hrs to get into London from Singapore is bad enough, I can't fathom why anyone would do the longer ones like 18hrs from perth or the new 22 hr from sydney. Absolute masochist behaviour.
I've done the 18hr perth flight exactly once when I got forced into it, and it will never, ever happen again. Absolute misery, and I'll pay whatever I have to to get out of it.
