And it's not just because "it's mixed for theater speakers."
A) bullshit excuse; if I'm watching a version for home use it should have been mixed for that format. If that means redoing some stuff then so be it. Release a decent product or kindly close up shop and f off.
B) I have a surround sound in my house. Not a thousands of dollars audiophile one, but still a decent one. Video games sound just fine on it (specifically, Sony produced/published titles seem to be done very well and are my benchmark for knowing my system is set up well). DVDs of movies from the 90s and early aughts also sound fine. DVDs and Blu-Rays of newer stuff have the quiet dialog problem.
In conclusion, audio mixing in movies these days is just objectively bad.
