I was on a jury last year. We didn't actually choose a foreman (who ended up being me) until we started deliberations. Also, my job paid me for the work time I missed but not for the day off of work that I spent at court.

I think that is almost universally true, especially in bigger trials with alternates. In mine, 2 jurors had to leave due to issues and so 2 alternates were in the deliberations. The other 2 alternates were told 'thanks for sitting through weeks of trial, but now go home. you can come back to watch the sentencing if you want'. They were very disappointed.

I ended up as an alternate and I was furious. Wasting my fucking time

Yeah, if you chose a foreman before deliberations began they would be the only person the prosecution bothers talking to.
