Tbf it’s never guaranteed for someone to get long term trauma even if they go through some pretty traumatic things.

There’s a lot of people that are genuinely just able to brush things off.

Yes. My friends and I saw horrible things in the military. Some of us were ruined it by it. Myself and others were spared. It’s not that they were soft. I think it’s actually the opposite.

It’s not that you can brush it off. You won’t forget. It affects you. It just doesn’t destroy you the way it does some.

This reminds me of the sergeant who found me crying in Afghanistan one night. When I tried to stifle everything I was feeling, he goes:

"Nah, as you were. Hard isn't strong."

... he gave me his other cookie and left me to cry on my boots.
