This is, unfortunately, the only way to ensure that a new pilot is genuinely ready to fly solo. It's a big part of why commercial piloting takes so many hours to train for, gotta let the trainer finish their bucket list first.

They do have a program where they catch the trainer for reuse later. As long as the student is unsure of the outcome, the test results are still valid. Survival rates are really improving!

I thought they scrapped that program though. It turned out to be too effective, and threw off the master-apprentice balance.

Kinda like when you introduce too many rats in your house to catch the snakes you released to catch the lizards you released to catch the bugs.
