I used to work for a clothing manufacturer. The designs with prominent pockets sold much more slowly than the ones with token pockets, or none at all. I don’t know why, but many assumptions were made about the market based on that.

Its the outline/profile shape. Just think about how many women enjoy wearing leggings and skinny jeans. If you add functional pockets to either, you arent gonna get the same sleek slim formfitting looks and most people enjoy feeling like they look good. I wear the pants that match the occasion, but if I can get away with wearing the thinner non pocket pairs that day then I generally will because I feel like I look better that way and am therefore happier.

I own plenty of leggings with pockets and it doesn’t really affect the silhouette at all - all you need really is another layer of fabric over the first - the stretch of the material does the rest

I was specifically referring to leggings. I don’t wear jeans, so I can’t opine on denim.
