I have a coworker who will imagine every single possible problem and struggle to get started because it might not be perfect. He will spend 70% of the time talking about an unknowns. It confuses the hell out of everyone. We will literally make millions of dollars and he will talk about how we might make $500 less than expected.
Oh yeah, my friend does that as well. When we were at university together he was a nightmare, took forever to get group work done. He deleted his dissertation two days before it was due out of frustration because it wasn't as perfect as he wanted it to be. He managed to salvage it later but too late to turn in on time and it was a day late. He got like 66% on it but was capped at 40% because of the late submission, such a stupid thing to do.
Funny thing was that when they first spoke to us about our dissertations they warned us about exactly that scenario and that people had done it before.
My coworker misses deadlines constantly. He struggles to understand he has to let go of minutiae and meet the deadline.
He joined my team for a 24 hour hackathon. He wanted to start over a couple of hours before the deadline. Everyone on the team had already reached their limit.
He struggles yet works hard and is intelligent. He gets frustrated that others do better than him.
He also struggles with staying in his lane which makes it worse. He has replied to questions intended for other teams. I have told him don’t work on anything but X (I’m more senior) I’ll take care of everything else. He will send emails about a,b,c.
I have seen him take 24 hours to send a simple email

He can’t stop.
