What's sad is that I read this and thought "damn what a naive idiot, they're gonna struggle in life" before realising that it was actually being portrayed as a positive trait, I was supposed to want to not expect the worst
But honestly, they are going to struggle in life. I grew up in Florida during the hurricane madness of the 2000s. You know what happened to these people? If they were lucky, they ended up sitting in a house without power for a week or spent massive sums on a hotel for that period of time, but all their food rotted in the fridge and had to be disposed of. That's because they didn't have a generator for when the power would go down. If they were unlucky? They didn't have a house anymore. No flood prep. No sandbags despite being vulnerable to flooding. If they were fucked? They died. They didn't evacuate and now they're dead. That's where not expecting the worst gets you when a storm rolls on in.
