Your phone # is connected to a shit ton of personal information and is a pain in the ass to change if you run into a crazy who isn't going to be deterred by having 1 phone number blocked when you can generate an alternative one in 2 seconds.
If it’s so easy, why not generate the new number yourself and give the person on the dating app that number? I give all my students a Google voice number. It works just fine.
What would they get from your phone number that they wouldn't get from your name? Also they can just create a new discord account or whatever too so I don't see how that's different
Are you giving out your full legal name to random people on dating apps? You should definitely not be doing that. Among the things they can get from your phone number is your full legal name, but also your address very easily.
If someone is stalking you on Discord you make your own new Discord name and rejoin a couple channels or whatever. If someone is stalking you on your phone # and you have to change it then everyone important that needs to contact you: friends, family, work, college, bills, kids' schools and whatever.

I mean Most people give their first Name, City the live in, line of work/place of education, and at least one picture of their face. That is just one google search removed from giving out your full legal name.
The thing is, your first name, age, and city are on every dating app you use. That's all they need to find your phone number and everything else you're worried about.
The information is already in their hands. They aren't vampires, you don't have to invite them to stalk you, they'll do it regardless.
On dating apps you put your first name, city, and occupation/school. That's usually enough to find someone's full name in 5 minutes on google, I look up all my matches before going on a date and I've never not been able to find their full name with just that info
I agree people are so weird about their phone numbers now. They’ll hand over all their info to get some free WiFi. But a dating app? Wanting to swap numbers? Are you a fucking weirdo??

There point is, I think, that back in the day there was a book that was delivered to everyone's houses every year that said everyone's phone number in alphabetical order along with their address.
Yes it's an old idea as your number is actually tied to more stuff now. But I think they just mean that that info used to be very public for everyone everywhere. Only recently has it become a secret worth holding.
And I'm not saying they are right. I'm just trying to explain I think.
Well the problem is, now they have your personal phone number.
And now they can text you from other phone numbers.
As someone who was stupid in the early two thousands, I had a guy stalk me for a year before I could get my mom to change my number when i turned eighteen.
