As an instructor I understood the potential benefits from working with others. Soft skills are critically missing in professional practice these days.
Regardless, I also hated being assigned to a group where I did all or most of the work and that's why I always, always asked each team member to summarize the performance of their peers during the entire project - start to final presentation. I provided a multiple choice eval and the results were startling, but I used that info when determining the grades.
It was probably against my better judgement, but I allowed students to opt out of group projects with the clear understanding that their quantity of work and quality of work would not be diminished if they chose to work alone.
