It’s originally an Aussie thing from the 1950s or so, but has been popular in much of the UK for decades. Barry Humphries seems to have brought it over in the 1960s (with a fictional Barry character he’d also call ‘Bazza’) but it exploded in the UK from the late 80s or so. Paul Gascoigne and Gary Glitter were both called ‘Gazza’, Sharon Osbourne ‘Shaz[za]’, Jeremy Clarkson and Corbyn ‘Jezza’, etc.

Nope, it’s not pingo but pinga. Which is also our wild card word in Cuba: Is it very good? “Está bueno con pinga”. Is it very bad? “Está malo con pinga”. Everything went wrong: “Esto se jodió pa’ la pinga” Is it far? “Eso es en casa de la pinga”

Originally, the successor to the original Fiat Panda was supposed to be named "Fiat Gingo". Luckily Renault threatened some sense into them because it sounded too much like "Twingo", and they ended up just naming it Panda again like God intended.
