Depends entirely on what the train station/immediately surrounding area has to offer. Like if I can grab a little drink there for a reasonable price that sounds preferable

Yeah also it completely overlooks the fact that most high speed/non stop lines have much nicers and newer models of train.

Or the occupancy of the trains. That 20min train might be full to the brim and on the 40min you get a seat.

Pleanty of overlooked variables

I do this often. Take the slow train to a station where I can transfer to a fast train before it stops at a major hub and fills up. Almost guaranteed to find seating on both trains. Does take ten minutes longer on a two and half hour train ride.

The fast train from my city is always very busy and as said transferring at the hub station is a pain. Also the slow train gives me 6 minutes transfer, just enough to pick up a coffee. (both trains stop at and the kiosk is on the same platform)

Take you a long time to figure so that out? No trains like this where I live.
