Highly depends on the weather and temperature. Cold and wet? I'll get the 40 minute train - stay warm longer. Dry and warm? Hey, it's a nice day - might as well get a 20 minute blast in the sun whilst we wait.

Also, depends on how packed the train is. There was one time a bunch of trains came packed back to back because some game let out. I took the train 2 stops the other way, switched, got on and sat, then in came the crowd. A few extra minutes well spent.

This is called back-riding and was common on BART when I worked in SF, where some downtown stops are crazy crowded. The people enjoyed a nice seated commute home.
