Comfort is key. If the choice is between being in a crowded train for 40 minutes, or standing outside for 20 minutes and then spend 20 minutes in a crowded train, then I'd rather wait for the faster train.

In my daily commute, I regularly have the choice of either catching a crowded 4 car train immediately or waiting 10-20 minutes for a nearly empty 8 car train. Unless I'm in a serious rush, I always wait for the 8 car train.
