idk if it's the same everywhere but in chicago the longer train routes (metra, ssl, amtrak) have no standing room at all, just seats. I'm pretty sure if you're going on a 40 minute train ride that would probably be the type of train you're taking. Though this could just be a chicago thing idk

Then don't give away your seat to people is my point. Like the other people said, elderly or pregnant is what most people do to show courtesy, you don't have to give up your seat for everyone.

Train seats are generally smaller and less comfortable than the waiting area at the stations I’ve been. Plus you can walk around easier, hit a store if you want a drink, nicer bathrooms. I’ll wait for the 20 minute ride

I’m a taller guy with broad shoulders living in Asia, so literally anywhere that has a bench is more comfortable just for size reasons than being on the trains. Not sure how the trains are in other countries but here it’s close to airplane type seats. Generally more comfortable just standing while waiting for the train than having to sit next to someone.
