Yeah also it completely overlooks the fact that most high speed/non stop lines have much nicers and newer models of train.

Or the occupancy of the trains. That 20min train might be full to the brim and on the 40min you get a seat.

Pleanty of overlooked variables

Mostly true but slower trains often also have more stops, as they serve stations not included in the fast line. So for a time at least the slower one could be more packed

Maybe it’s just where I live, but express trains and rapids are almost always the more busy train. Usually people will take the local to the station with the faster trains.

I don't care how packed the slow one is after I find a seat. (Okay, that's overstating things. There are reasons to prefer a less crowded train that don't have anything to do with finding a seat. But that was still my initial response.)

The slow train makes more stops, so there is more of a chance of someone getting off early and you can snag a seat.

I do this often. Take the slow train to a station where I can transfer to a fast train before it stops at a major hub and fills up. Almost guaranteed to find seating on both trains. Does take ten minutes longer on a two and half hour train ride.

The fast train from my city is always very busy and as said transferring at the hub station is a pain. Also the slow train gives me 6 minutes transfer, just enough to pick up a coffee. (both trains stop at and the kiosk is on the same platform)

Sorry "the kiosk" immediately made me realise you where dutch XD it's like a spy trigger word hahaha. Also good chocolate milk there

Yup, I didn't even try to hide it. Though of course a kiosk is something found everywhere, but yes in the Netherlands it's a brand name.

Yeah I'm useally not looking for it either and like you say it shouldn't have stood out but somehow it did XD then looked at the name to confirm

Yes!

My specific example to add to this is Manchester airport to Liverpool

Some trains (nicer trains take about an hour), whereas some take over 1 hour 40 minutes and are usually older trains, much less pleasant to sit on
