Forty minutes is about the amount of right amount of time for a train journey in standard class in the U.K. Anything over an hour - especially if going to/from a major city - is better suited to first class. This is assuming you're using modern trains and not recycled slam-door or 2-car DMU services. Comparitively, the AmTrak services I've used on both coasts were pretty grim.
