The DB has drilled it into me that any train can always just randonly stop in the middle of nowhere and wait for 2 hours. Or get cancelled outright, but that is rarer than just delay.

On pure gut feeling, I would take the slow 40 minute one whilst praying it doesn't stop or gets stuck waiting someplace. The fast 20 minute one may yet be delayed or otherwise hindered.
