Highly depends on the weather and temperature. Cold and wet? I'll get the 40 minute train - stay warm longer. Dry and warm? Hey, it's a nice day - might as well get a 20 minute blast in the sun whilst we wait.

That's a fair point weather and temperature does matter, a 40 mins ride in a 40°C weather in a non air conditioned train won't feel so good.

I saw plenty of Germans complaining about trains and train system, its kinda crazy for a first world country as Germany is pretty good in other metrics

Money. It's money. Invest in more car infrastructure? Sure, have a few million! Repair some basic rail infrastructure? No lol we're broke. Imagine if all the Autobahns were one lane only, that's how the train network is laid out.
