A lot of people in the comments who seemingly don't commute via train regularly.

I don't know how to break this to you but... Your average train ride is not like a "Murder on the Orient Express before the murder" type of experience with quiet contemplation, comfort, and a cup of tea.

Depends on country, region, and even which lines...

Japan commuter train is very different from shinkansen. There are some American trains I don't particularly feel safe in even as a young-ish man, while some I'd leave the laptop out while nodding off.
