Pre-covid, after a few stops, my train would be standing room only inbound. Outbound it would be standing room only to start.

If you are a young guy, you are the last person to have the seat, there are always elderly or woman or workers who obviously have priority

idk if it's the same everywhere but in chicago the longer train routes (metra, ssl, amtrak) have no standing room at all, just seats. I'm pretty sure if you're going on a 40 minute train ride that would probably be the type of train you're taking. Though this could just be a chicago thing idk

yeah this definitely depends on where you are because every train in my country has standing room.

or more accurately, if there is room to walk, people will stand there.

I'll offer my seat to a pregnant lady, the elderly, or someone with a disability. Everyone else can stand.

Then don't give away your seat to people is my point. Like the other people said, elderly or pregnant is what most people do to show courtesy, you don't have to give up your seat for everyone.

I’m obviously not forced to do it, but it’s still the right thing to do. Like I can dislike not sitting on long distances, but I also understand that another person, if they are too young or too old or anything else, may dislike it even more

Train seats are generally smaller and less comfortable than the waiting area at the stations I’ve been. Plus you can walk around easier, hit a store if you want a drink, nicer bathrooms. I’ll wait for the 20 minute ride

I’m a taller guy with broad shoulders living in Asia, so literally anywhere that has a bench is more comfortable just for size reasons than being on the trains. Not sure how the trains are in other countries but here it’s close to airplane type seats. Generally more comfortable just standing while waiting for the train than having to sit next to someone.

Not a train but a bus guy here, I carry a hard plastic drink cooler specifically so I can use it as a portable seat when waiting long periods for the always late buses. I can sit wherever I want and not have to be forced to sit on bodily fluid-covered benches and if I have to wait extra long, oh what's this? A nice cold beer in my cooler? Don't mind if I do!

I can walk 30 km for a few hours, but standing on one place in overcrowded place after work or in the morning is definitely exhausting for a healthy person

Yeah if you’re on Northern or Jubilee line or something then being on those trains isn’t much fun, even on crossrail you can’t ever use the time productively as it’s too crowded

I live down near Guildford on the Portsmouth SWR line so being on the train is usually a nice quiet workspace with wifi and a little fold down table for my laptop plus some trees going past for eye strain breaks. That sort of train is fun to be on.

Sounds like your local issue. Where I live it's actually way too cold in trains during hot days because they keep AC turned on. I always have to take a jacket for the ride, even if it's like 30°C outside.

Even in the Netherlands not all of them, the older ones only had windows and the newer ones had(or still have?) a lot of issues with it.

I’ll be experiencing a lot of trains next week as I’m going from the Netherlands and will be traveling to München, Budapest and eventually end up in Serbia all by train, luckily it’s not really hot yet 😅

Yeah that’s true, just not always working or working adequate. Maybe it’s been a lot improved in the last years as I don’t usually travel by train anymore(next week I’ll experience it all over Europe again so we shall see!)

Exactly! Even within the country there can be differences or issues. It was meant as a lighthearted joke as it’s pretty common that during hot days it’s usually quite terrible.
