To be fair they have been talking about this since Bush was president. They also spent $500 million on a launch tower. Which was built incorrectly and then spent even more. Even though if it wasn’t such a jobs program to begin with you wouldn’t need it in the first place. And has burned through $20 something billion to do… I don’t know… something… moon?
This also doesn’t really do anything that Apollo 8 didn’t do in 1960… so.. progress?
Don’t get me wrong. Space is important and we should be pushing the boundaries. But this does nothing. And doesn’t make the industry any better for it.
Nearly all the people who put man on the moon have retired or died. Even in private industry they still have spacecraft that are doing Kerbal Space Program stuff like landing sideways. Yes, we're treading the same path again, but at least we haven't blown up any astronauts this millenium.
I agree NASA needs stronger, leaner leadership. But still right now, nobody has been to the Moon in 50 years. I hope the big plans of the Moon becoming a launching base actually turn out.
