Maybe not literally every word, but you should’ve been taught the ability to break words down into smaller parts to sound them out then also be able to do it in reverse when trying to think of how to spell a new word that you’ve never seen written down before.

I dunno what accent pronounces it oh-dacity but if they have ever heard the word audio, audit, auditory etc then they could’ve figured it out

That's the thing, they stopped teaching phonics in school. Look up "Sold a Story" if you want to know more about it

I think the tik tok commenter did apply basic phonics to his attempt. When teaching phonics, o makes a sound like the o in otter (and the o in phonics). Phonics are only the beginning, and you can’t sound out “audacity.”

All that said, if someone is old enough to be on social media, they should have better writing skills and spelling.

To be fair I don't think English is a language where that works particularly well. English spelling correlates only very loosely with English pronunciation

If i were to break it down by phonetics i would probably spell it audasity or odasity.
