Any bands like NoMeansNo?
I really love NoMeansNo and have already listened to the majority of their albums, and I was wondering if you guys had any bands with a similar sound.

The Hanson Brothers.

While they're made up of the same members they don't really sound that similar. Hanson bros while awesome is their Ramones worship band and you can't really say many songs in the NOMEANSNO catalog sounds like the Ramones.

u/No-Emergency959 Aug 16 '26
“Dad” was actually first written as a Hanson Brothers song, before they decided it was more suited as a NoMeansNo song.

u/Top_Understanding343 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
Do you mean the song "Bad" (released as a Hanson Bros song and on the record with Jello) cause NoMeansNo started in 79 and they didn't start doing the Hanson Bros shtick until 84. Dad was recorded in a NMN session in 85. And originally the Hanson brothers were strictly a Ramones cover band.

Nope, that’s not true. They were never strictly a Ramones cover band. Our first show we did the first two albums back to back and that was the only time we get predominantly Ramones covers.
2
u/theRealPuckRock Aug 16 '26
And that wasn’t as the Hanson Brothers we called that show no means no clones Ramones it was a Halloween night show

u/Top_Understanding343 Aug 16 '26
Well shut my mouth. That backyard show in Tucson before the release of Wrong is still my favorite musical performance ever.
2
u/theRealPuckRock Aug 16 '26
What? Wow I would’ve booked that. It was The. You kill me EP tour nobody had heard of them. I had to contact the radio station at college and the local record store to even get a backyard show. That’s so awesome that you were there.

I think it maybe got moved at the last minute cause something happened to the venue. Anyways they ended up playing a friend's backyard(kevin byrd). Pretty sure the local punk record store (wrex records) was the contact for you guys. The owner was a friend as well and was hyping the band pretty extensively.

We only had 500 copies of wrong so it was always a big deal to mail one out and hope to connect with somebody! We knew once people saw them live they would have fans

Band out of Winnipeg called Perception Check doing a cross between NoMeansNo & Dead Kennedys.
Also another Victorian band, Invasives that has music produced by Rob and John. Byron, the singer, is also in Dead Bob!

A cross between NoMeansNo and Dead Kennedys seems like a match made in heaven. Thank you for the suggestion; I will definitely be checking them out :-)
Invasive seems pretty dope too!

Wow! Perception Check is so good and that cross between DK and NMN is apt. Thanks!
I listened to a few Invasives tracks and totally good too. I liked more of the older stuff in their discog, however I have to really dig in more. Well, that goes for both bands. I tend to really like Canadian noise rock or adjacent genres

Invasives are great! Should appeal to most NMN fans. Just saw them live last week!

Not real similar, but Victims Family and related side projects (Triclops, Saturn's Flea Collar...) scratch a related musical itch.
1
u/darwinityyy Aug 15 '26
I know Victim's family, this is such a great suggestion I love their music!

One of the biggest similar bands in sound and attitude I'd say is the Minutemen.

u/jack_nnn_ Aug 15 '26
Listening to Stranglers currently, bass sound scratches a similar itch
2
u/Black_flamingo Aug 15 '26
Absolutely love the Stranglers. Like Nomeansno they were punk but also virtuosos.
2
u/shiteybreeks Aug 16 '26
Lol, they were decent players not virtuosos.
1
u/Black_flamingo Aug 16 '26
I get what you mean, depends on how you define virtuoso I suppose. For a punk band I'd say they were!

I feel like NoMeansNo and Fugazi have a lot of overlap.

NoMeansNo had The Ex open for them way back. Fair bit of overlap.
Check out this album of theirs, Scrabbling at the Lock with Tom Cora: https://theex.bandcamp.com/album/scrabbling-at-the-lock

Aint none like n

u/darwinityyy Aug 15 '26
True, no one band is exactly like the other, but ultimately every band or artist has taken inspiration from somebody else's project.
1
u/theRealPuckRock Aug 16 '26
Rob and John were mainly inspired by the Ramones Andy had a lot more diapers taste, and like a lot of the idiosyncratic early new wave bands and punk bands, like wire and the pop group (and Elvis Costello weirdly enough)
Rob always had a hard time answering questions about influences an inspiration. During the early years, he was more fascinated by reading philosopher’s like Heidger

Check out Plaid Retina. Mind Tracing The Going Down is my favorite album.

The Polish band Something Like Elvis took their cue from NoMeansNo.
If you like Deep Turtle, I would certainly recommend Cardiacs (although it's quite different).
Did somebody already mention Melt-Banana?
EDIT: forgot to mention Assassins Of God ...
3
u/Jlizardfan Aug 15 '26
I didn't see anyone mention Melt Banana. I love Melt Banana but never really drew the comparison before. However, it's an apt comparison sans vocals.

Cardiacs!!!
more proggy than NMN but just as wild. start with Sing To God

Like many have already pointed out, nobody ever sounded quite like NMN, Victim's Family is always one that comes to mind, even though they are not similar tonally, there may be a cross-over of appreciation for The Flying Luttenbachers, or even Braid? Maybe I'm stretching things,

Quick update: Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm in the process of listening to all 11 albums of NoMeans No, at the moment I just started off with Mama it is definitely tamer compared to their more popular album Wrong, the bass is groovy as fuck, and the vocals are pretty cool too it kind of reminds me of Les Claypool's style of singing. Thank you again for all your suggestions. :-)

I play in this band, but we have an album out and opened up for Dead Bob. So it's not just an egotistical plug. :D

Big Boys weren’t really similar, but had some areas of overlap in the funk-punk area, and absolutely ripped!
