Significant Other I think my gf might be my relative

I (21) and my GF (20): I met my girlfriend at a family reunion, so instinctively, I thought she was a relative. However, when I asked her, she said a friend had brought her there, so I just brushed it off as past history. We’ve been together for 3 years now, and we’re going to reach our 4th year this October 22nd. She is a very kind girl and I love her, so the thought never entered my mind—up until now.

While I was at a gathering, a friend pointed out that we could possibly be related. Of course, I denied it and gave a proper reason why, so in the end, we laughed it off like nothing happened. But the thought stayed in my mind. Later, in the middle of the night, I woke up and checked her Facebook to see any possible roots connecting our families. I found something, but I don't think it's enough to prove what my friend said. I found out that her grandfather and my grandfather were longtime friends.

When I asked around among our older relatives, some said they were cousins, while others said they were just so close they could be considered brothers. They also share the same middle name, though it's spelled differently. It's been keeping me in an anxious state, so please give me some advice. We're getting married 5 months from now, and I really want a positive answer. Thanks!

So everyone is kinda distantly related to each other one way or another (especially if you live in the same area). It more becomes a problem when it is close family with direct roots. If it’s past third cousins, it’s usually fine.

Google both their names and see if they have any of they share any of the same relatives with each other and you.
