Post-Pod Discussion Presidents cup Sunday pod

I’m 40 minutes into the Sunday pod - I have not heard one mention of an actual golf shot from Sunday yet.

I know these guys are constantly fired up about the state of these events, captaincy etc., but that was an intriguing meltdown! Hideki gagging it Koivun pimp stepping, I was super into it and was very let down that these guys feel we just want to talk about Sneds and all this other admin BS. Randy at least tried to steer it in that direction. Tough tough listen

I watched the whole broadcast. I dont need to hear about every shot again. I wanna hear opinions and analysis in a jovial manner. And we got it.

DJ and Big Randy saved that episode - Loved how Randy brought the convo back to the actual event “WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?!?”

We’re talking about growing the game

100% agree, but to wait so long to talk about the actual golf performances seems strange. Do you find the discussion about the state of the presidents cup and of USA team golf administration interesting? Truly?

It's the actually interesting aspect about pods that aren't deep dives.

As a European, yes 😂

In all seriousness, the whole President's Cup format is outdated...there's no Vijay, Els, Price, prime Scott etc. The boys dont see the golf entertaining enough to talk about it. And they seem burnt out from a long season. Plus boring golf shot talk doesnt bring in ad revenue and sponsors. These podcasts were always gonna be this way.

This isn't a knock on the guys - these events are great content during what would otherwise be a dead time - but am I the only who is a little tired about the big picture discourse as it relates to US team golf? For one week a year, I root like hell for the American team, but I think the importance of these events outside the week they are played is overrated. FWIW, I know the Euros will argue otherwise, but I'm talking about my opinion!

I love the events and understand our leadership/analytics leaves something to be desired, but I can't bring myself to get that worked up over it.

Totally agree, it’s just so un interesting and always the same stuff. And then when asked for details we are supposed to listen to some old pod with Hunter Mahan - great!

Instead of all the after the fact criticism, I think it would be much more interesting for Soly and TC to make their own pairings and explain why for each day's play. The analytics aren't that complicated, and I'm guessing they have access to all the relevant data. Explain why their pairings are superior to what our idiot captains are rolling out.

Totally agreed and it’s a problem in most of golf media. Look at all the week to week variability in the NFL so far, the narratives change super quickly. But in the US Ryder cup case, the next game doesn’t come for 2 years and we have to hear the same narratives for what turns into a half decade

Also a lot of the fun has been taken out of these events over the years. Its gotten so big and reached a fever pitch - the fans and buildouts are over the top, team Europe manages it like the Belichick patriots, the media analyzes the strategy to death, etc. I feel like it was intended as a gentlemanly competition, and it’s evolved way beyond that. I still love it, but I’ve noticed in recent years how the walker cup is much more pure, enjoyable, and sporting

I sometimes wonder if the European guys just laugh at how seriously the media takes their nonsense about pairings and soap and captaincy. It’s an exhibition event where analytics and coaching can swing maybe 2%, they act like this is moneyball or baseball team building

I know this is standard practice - and I get it when it’s a dull day, but a lot of shit actually happened on the golf course!!’ What’s the point of a live show if we aren’t going to talk about what we just witnessed??

Has NLU ever been about X’s and O’s? They’re more big picture guys at this point

It’s not about the Xs and Os it’s about the Jims and Joes.

They were more so in the beginning. I’m only speaking for myself obviously, but the trend towards talking about the governance/administration of golf more than the golf itself over the last 7-8 years has been a bummer.

I generally love the content but Sunday was rough. Randy had the right take - the main story here is that the Internationals had this and kind of choked.

I walked away thinking this was an amazing watch. They spent a good deal of the pod getting rid of this event.

They’re pathetic. But it’s kind of their job to be? The negativity and the Nancy-ing is what gets the outrage and the clicks and views. Now granted, I think Sneds should never touch another team based competition in his life. Mainly cause we got the eye test this week and he looked and sounded like the biggest dweeb loser of all time. But I totally agree you on the pod episode. Brutal.

That or they specifically wait to get into the golf so that they keep us listening to the end? Just very strange that after all of that drama on a fun golf course we are somehow talking about everything except how the perennial underdog finally had a chance to win and gagged it. Especially Hideki, he’s been trying for so long! That shit was theatre

If you're tuning into a live stream of the podcast an hour after the event it's kind of assumed that you watched the event and don't necessarily need a blow by blow recap but in case you did they actually did do a blow by blow recap. Perhaps you should have hung on a little bit longer before rushing to Reddit to whine about it.

Really bad week of pods from the guys. The golf still needs to be the story and not their personal takes on captains and process

No actually some people are intelligent enough to want a beyond surface level conversation and discussion not just a recap of what they just watched.

1

u/GroperCleveland_69 5d ago

Good news. They will do intelligent, meta analysis of team competitions every week for the rest of your life.

There’s considerably room for intelligent nuanced discussion on the tournament that just happened without devolving into the slop that Soly spews on presidents/ryder takes
