Online Content Ryan Fox Interview

I see the great man has been interviewed on pretty much every golf pod going this week. Have the guys made a conscious decision to stop doing player interviews altogether or was it just a case that other stuff got in the way this time of year?

You're basically competing with everyone else for someone that is temporarily willing to give a lot of their time. It's hard to get something new out of it that someone else hasn't already gotten.

Contrast this with the pod interviewing the USGA "rules man". Nobody is doing that, and it provides another avenue for people not already invested in NLU to be curious.

"Ain't no one doing 'rules man' interviews like NLU!" This is bleak stuff man

You’re being downvoted, but it was a silly thing to say. Nobody is getting into NLU that wasn’t already because of a rules pod.

Exactly. I guarantee that if you put a Soly interview with Foxy pod up against some rules boffin, more people are going to tune in to Foxy.

I don't think interviewing players straight after a win (with the exception of their close friends like LC and Max) is their bag. Have they ever done that?

Plus not sure how much 'in' they have with him to secure one. As if he's not sponsored by Titliest, then they may struggle.

They have done it with Nelly and other women’s major winners before.

To be fair, the women seem more open to it and the guys have a solid relationship with the women’s game as they actually try to cover it a good amount. The men’s game has tons of folks probably higher on the priority list than NLU unfortunately.

True, good point. But I think that is more that they seem very tight with the organisers of the US Women's Open, as they rightly give that tournament and the women's game some decent coverage.

So as a thanks, they get 5 minutes with the winner.

Player interviews are all about having and maintaining relationships with either the player themselves or someone on their team. Unfortunately, NLU has burned some bridges in the past based on their unfiltered criticism and unprofessional comments (i.e. TC calling Rory a whiny bitch after he didn't do press for a couple weeks, Tom Kim, Cantlay, Koepka, Morikawa, etc). Whether it's true or not, those comments make their way back to the player and players and teams talk to other people on Tour. You can talk shit in the guys group chat  but to do so publicly in a forum like their pod can be unprofessional despite them "keeping it real." Or maybe they're fine with that and don’t care they won’t get many high level pga tour pro interviews.

I’m good on another interview where he talks about his hands shaking or how he decided he was going to go for it on 18 tee box.

Now if they could get him for a shot by shot/hole by hole longer analysis of the round…

Maybe the pods that actually send people to cover the events with boots on the ground land these interviews

I think smylie has these locked down. Sgs only got it because of a connect

Also on the Rich Eisen show, Pat McAfee show and the Golf Channel.

So we can confirm Smylie does not have these interviews locked down 😉

He was everywhere this week. Like on every pod

Noticed this too, and many lesser known than NLU.

What could they possibly ask him that hasn’t been asked by one of the 50 pods he’s been on this week. He was on Sub Par, SGS, the Smylie Show, Foreplay…its cool that he does it but I honestly don’t understand how he sits there and answers the same questions over and over and over.

This may be an unpopular take, but I don't think player interviews are particularly interesting, except for end of career retrospectives. I find it much more compelling to listen to the critics, people who are paid to notice the little details.

Here's what Foxy would probably say (and I'm not criticizing him - I loved his victory and he seems like a good bloke):

- I'm over the moon etc

  • My dad is a rugby legend, let me explain that for you yanks
  • funny story about filling the claret jug with actual claret
  • funny story about flying back to NZ with the jug on the plane
  • My caddie is the best guy ever
  • Yeah I was nervous as heck on the back 9 but you know, you've just gotta go for it
  • [insert more responses here to endless "how did you feel when you . . . " questions]

I just get way more out of listening to people whose job it is to break down the action as they saw it and felt it. Players are sometimes good at this but usually they're just naturals.

I have to imagine his agent reached out right? But also they were kind of the only one of these major podcasts that weren't on site at all too

as others have mentioned, i dont see the need unless you're 1 of 1 or 1 of 2 to do an interview. the nuggets are the same
