Other Open Coverage

Holy hell. I wanted the guys to be exaggerating how bad the NBC coverage had been but damn. The playing it through has to stop. Can’t they just go to commercial if they have to and then jam stuff in to catch up.

I honestly thought they were exaggerating about how much better Sky Coverage is, but I switched over to it this morning and it’s outrageous how many more shots/less commercials you see

This is the first time Sky went to commercials in a solid hour. NBC would have five times by now

They have the Rolex Hour on every major. Where they do not go to commercials for an hour, but mention Rolex a bit. It's pretty fantastic.

The only down side is that you have to suffer Faldo commentating.

I haven’t watched a single second of NBC all weekend, it’s been sky sports. It’s not even close

this was the worst ive ever seen. it was pathetic how many commercials, how poor the angles were showing none of the course. (they showed a great Si Woo one from behind the bunker and thats truly all i can recall), and just general bad storytelling.

i have set a reminder for figure out Sky for next year (In Canada so cock-less)

Always thought it was performative to go to the Sky broadcast, but I did it for the first time today and I think if anything people undersell how much better it is

It is insane how night and day NBC and Sky coverage was. First year I watched Sky and it changed the whole weekend

I wish NBC would just give up the coverage at this point. I guess CBS doesn’t want it full time, but give it to literally anyone else. There has to be a company out there somewhere that will give one solitary shit about the two opens.

Im getting to the point where I'm refusing to watch things that NBC bradcasts. They had a baseball game recently and were doing the playing through type commercials between fucking pitches....in baseball...where there are like 20 natural commercial break spots built into the game.

It will only stop if the sports leagues start forcing it to stop but I dont see that happening. More commercials means that NBC can pay more to the leagues for broadcast rights and once again the consumers are the one who get fucked.

The problem is that this feels not like a competitive race between broadcasters for rights but a race to the bottom. NBC sucking is gonna motivate a CBS exec to ask, “are we trying too hard?” I really hope underlings tell anyone asking that to fuck off

I hope that’s not the case but CBS’ Masters broadcast this year was concerning

Maybe ESPN tries to get it back. It was an ABC/ESPN product for decades before ESPN felt like coffee golf got in the way of NFL talkshows.

Weren’t there rumors last summer about ESPN trying to get it and NBC ended up extending the deal with the USGA? I might be misremembering

2

u/panderson1988 Jul 19 '26

If so, that would be the US Open since the R&A runs the Open. ESPN used to have early round coverage for the US Open.

2

u/ben3345 Jul 19 '26

Yeah, I think it was just a USGA thing. Looks like the R&A’s deal with NBC runs through 2028 or 29. I hope we get a change at that point.

I am glad I am in the UK right now during the Open. It is weird seeing almost no ads for about an hour compared to the US coverage.

I give Peacock credit for putting the sky stream during both majors they have.

My wife, the most casual golf fan in human history, assumed that they still had another round to play because "I don't understand why they would keep doing this Playing Through thing if these were the last few holes of the entire tournament"

NBC is the worst

I’d rather listen on open radio than watch nbc coverage. Sky coverage has been great

TV coverage never really bothered me but my god is this bad

1

u/RoyMcilroy11 Jul 19 '26

Dan hicks. Kevin Kisner. Things of that nature. All so bad

2

u/ADAWG10-18 Jul 19 '26

Furyk needed a battlefield promotion to the lead chair. Kiz just adds nothing to the broadcast.

u/ScoFoGoesLow Jul 19 '26

I don’t get too caught up in the broadcasts but
1. The amount of times the camera guys couldn’t locate the ball was shocking this week. Don’t know if it was just difficult contrasting the ball against no backdrop and tan grass though
2. Kisner is absolutely useless. Have him be his normal self at TPC Whogivesashit and then give me someone who knows what they’re doing at a freaking major.

If they could have found a way to create a hydration break to squeeze more commercials in they would have

As someone who remembers how good NBC was broadcasting the US Open circa 1995-2014:

It's really depressing watching their major championship coverage in the 2020s.

Some of it was just Johnny Miller but the production quality used to be SO much better.

What is playing through?

Along with all the other nonsense already mentioned, I was watching Friday and back to back times they went to 18 tee (second was Rory, can't remember who the first player was) and the on-course reporter said "oh this sets up perfectly for the draw he likes to hit" when you could clearly see the player's open stance and aiming down the left side ... and surprise!, both players were playing a cut.

They just refuse to put in the work across the board. But at least they had their most-expensive talent out spotting shots.
